"Chevy Chase FD surprised many by obtaining this 1979 Mack CF 1250/500/40 in the slime flavor, rather than CCFD' previous school-bus yellow."

I want to say the reason it was that color was to match the first Hazmat unit. I a converted pumper for Cabin John... I believe.

I could be wrong.

When was the hazmat team formed?
The rig was a 1976 Chevy C-50/Firemaster 300/400 midi pump, not sure why CJVFD thought buying this was a good idea.005.jpg

By the late 80s, the converted mini-pumper was overloaded and wearing out, so plans were drawn up for a new haz-mat rig.
Meanwhile, Washington Gas donated a surplus service truck, which was a 1979 Ford L-700/Stahl. as a second rig to take some weight off the Chevy. This truck went in service early in 1989.
The Ford would run for 6 years with the new Ford/Hackney rig, in spring 1997, it was donated to Paw Paw VFD, Morgan Co.,WV.
The rig would be OOS by summer 2005, and was sitting at an old garage on MD 51 at Spring Gap,MD4159.jpg4209.jpg005.jpg

The last of 4 rigs donated by MCDFRS in 1996-7 also turned out to have a strange outcome, this Seagrave from Co. 15 was a 1986 1500/750/60 that was replaced in 1996. Apparently it had major mechanical issues and was flatbedded to Tower Hill #2 VFC in Fayette Co.,PA. where the members would completely overhaul the unit and replace a 1960s Mack.
We visited Tower Hill in July, 2001, as part of an effort to photograph all Fayette Counties stations, and the Seagrave was nowhere in sight.
The members who pulled out the rigs including the Mack (a 1971 CF, gas-powered) the Seagrave was supposed to replace were tightlipped both about the fate of the Seagrave, and the assistant fire chief who had spearheaded the project. He was long gone from the company.
Fortunately Tower Hill's purchase of Hyattstown's squad has been more satisfactory, and a famous PG County Mack CF was later sold by this dept. to a collector.006.jpg

This 1986 restaurant fire on Veirs Mill Rd. in Rockville was the 1st Montco working fire that I got to actually watch for awhile, as my employer at the time was nearby.
IIRC it was at least 2 alarms, and now you know why TRK 6 (Sally) stank of smoke when it was received from Rockville.
I really feel for that poor guy taking a blow, that air tank looks like it weighs 100 lbs.007.jpg

Sometimes in life you see the same thing again at a different place; in the late 1980s and early 1990s I was a courier visiting the NIH campus in Bethesda twice a day, I often saw BFD CO.20 hit the street with this 1986 Seagrave HB 1500/750/60, when I got a decent camera in 1991 this was 1 of my first stops. This was the last canopy cab Seagrave purchased in Montgomery Co., and served until replaced by a late 90s Freightliner/E1 "economy engine".
In 2003, I read a newspaper article that said this engine had been donated to Cumberland, MD., and would be rehabbed before entering service there. In June, 2005, I went to Cumberland for a dept. photo shoot in conjunction with my book project and the CFD's 100th anniversary.
When this rig rolled into the parking lot I amazed by its appearance, but mechanical issues forced its retirement from CFD in 2007, and it ended up at the fire training center in Cresaptown, MD. not sure of its current condition. It was well used by CFD while they ran it, including the biggest downtown fire in 54 years in 2006.
Perhaps Montco should donate another rig or two, CFD's newest rig is 11 years old with 4 from the 1990s.4412.jpg4164.jpg4391.jpg9283.jpg

Sometimes at a fire scene you get potpourri; on 7/23/1992, lightning struck a small horse barn on Sweetwater Drive in the Redland area between Gaithersburg and Sandy Spring.
Because of other calls, the first 4 Montgomery units on the scene were:
From nearby GWGVFD Sta. 28;
A289 - 1 member
BR28 - 1 member, E281 was out on another call with 3 other members, seeing the smoke from the station, A289 responded with both units left in station.
Glen Echo E112; responded while enroute to a parade in MT. Airy, all other 1st alarm engines were already out. Had full crew of volunteers.
Rockville TRK3; only rig from Sta. 3 available, had volunteer driver and officer, perhaps 1 or 2 more.
I got to the scene just after the arrival of these 4 units, it was a long wait for anything else to show up.003.jpg4939.jpg4944.jpg4852.jpg4855.jpg
BR28, a 1980 Jeep CJ-7, with 90/100, emptied its tank through 2 lines
E112, an 1971 ALF 1000 series, with a unusual 1990 Ranger body, 1250/500, 112's tank was empty by the time the supply line was picked up.
TRK3, A 1989 Seagrave 110' RM, went through a low canopy of trees accessing the barn area from the driveway. It sustained some deep scratches, and several lights and antennas were damaged. The somewhat chagrined driver is seen getting his rig back in order, note tree branches beside rig

An old Bethesda rig is for sale in Kankakee, ILL. , a 1981 ALF Century that was E61 for 10 years, and then a spare. It is believed this engine was donated to Seneca Rocks VFD in WVA in the late 1990s, but wasn't there long, and obviously ended up in Kankakee. The KFD union was using this engine for public relations.4389.jpg68314878_10217276509719092_2610270961169072128_n.jpg69085251_10217276513479186_7541255336691236864_n.jpg68547012_10217276510039100_1384467327587713024_n.jpg67974067_10217276513919197_4673827873008648192_n.jpg68265230_10217276514559213_6731370421884551168_n.jpg
