if you look at this building on google earth it had a major collapse in the middle of the building, then if you look at the street view you cant see the collapse, but there's a 2.5 gallon gas can in the doorway!

Mike - good eye. That's pretty crazy. It's a damn shame too, because there is a house at the corner of Belleterre at Lipton that is perfectly manicured that someone still cares about.

The view, for anyone that cares: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Belleterre+at+Lipton,+Detroit,+Michigan&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=57.553742,79.013672&t=h&hnear=Belleterre+St+%26+Lipton+Ave,+Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan+48204&z=17

Sounds like Detroit has been busier then usual (if that's possible). I was up there for 1 day last weekend and never got any photos, they were too busy to sit still for more then 10 mins. I saw they announced the list of closures;
Engines-5, 8, 20, 21, 23, 31, 33, 38, 42 and 47
Ladders-1, 10, 16, 24

I assume all the squads will be left in-service, the guys I talked to said they probably wont be able to keep all of them on each shift.

Engines 10, 32 and 49 are closed now. The apparatus of Engine 10 and 32 were reassigned to other companies, with 49s rig being used as a spare by the shops.

Engines 51 and 57 are being browned out most days.

Engines 33 and 42 are in service most days, but Ladders 13 and 21, which are housed with them are out of service.

Ladders 13, 18, 19, 21, and 30 are being browned out most days.

Other companies are stuck picking up the slack, especially Ladders 6, 17, and 20. Ladder 17 is basically the first due truck on every box in the 8th Battalion now.

All 6 squads have remained in service. A couple of them have been running on spare pumpers, but hey its transportation.

Wow, bet they didn't know how good things were back in 1953! That was close to the peak for the city.

I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

I got to ask, living in the metro area most of my life and becoming a firefighter out in the sticks and wanting to move/work out towards detroit, does anyone know if they will hire in the next few years? i have friends in detroit, everything from a FEO, FF and officers and they loose guys on disability and due to retirement, even with cutbacks wont they need to replenish the ranks, i mean i would do anything to be a firefighter in detroit

Good question, with the financial emergency manager, I don't know if the city will do any hiring for anything though.

I believe in the documentary Burn they mention that the only new guys they have been getting come from other city departments.

Sounded like they had a pretty busy 4-5 days! Another vacant 2-story apartment bldg that went to 2 alarms, with a vacant 2-flat a couple blocks away at the sametime on Monday afternoon.

Plus several rounds of relief.
Dan, Was this in HP or Detroit? Was a 2nd alarm transmitted in Detroit or just a lot of calls for extra companies? Steve
