Baltimore City Fire Department

For Immediate Release - May 6, 2003

Fire Department Displays New Apparatus

In continuing the Fire Department's tradition of providing the citizens of Baltimore with the highest caliber of service, 6 new pumpers and 4 squad units will be on display May 8, 2003 in front of city hall at 9:30 am. The units have an upgraded cab and chasis which differ from apparatus that was purchased in previous years. The Chief of Fire Department, William J. Goodwin, Jr. and Mayor Martin O' Malley are expected to be present at this event.

Improvements in the new pumpers include a foam tank in the running board of each unit, a water discharge on the front bumper, public address capability and interior cab compartments designed to hold emergency medical supplies. Each unit will be outfitted with a 5" hose to move large quantities of water and high quality nozzles to apply water in any tactical situation. The cost of these pumpers are approximately $248,000 each.

The squad units, costing approximately $274,000 each have a complete set of rescue tools, including the jaws of life, high pressure air bags along with ram and vehicle extrication tools. Additionally, the squads have on board electrical generators and compartment space dedicated for homeland defense equipment along with a heavy duty front axle suspension. Two more ladder trucks are expected to arrive in May and they will replace existing apparatus.

The following is a list of the locations where the apparatus are assigned. Engine 8 is located at 1503 W. Lafayette Avenue, Engine 14 is located at 1908 Hollins Street, Engine 27 is located at 4315 Mannasota Avenue, Engine 31 is located at 3123 Greenmount Avenue, Engine 44 is located at 2 Upland Avenue and Engine 51 at 646 N. Highland Avenue.

Our squad units are geographically located in all quadrants of the city. Engine 11 is located in southeast Baltimore at 5714 Eastern Avenue, Engine 47 is located in southwest at 2608 Washington Boulevard. In the northern corridor we have Engine 54 located at 5821 Belair Road and at 3906 Liberty Heights Avenue we have Engine 40.

daysleeper, yes I have, I'm glad that you said something, as I forgot to add it. Here's Baltimore's New Fireboat built by: Hike Metal Products of Canada. It's 87' long, with a pumping capacity of 12,500 gpm through 4 monitor pipes, and has a top speed of 16knts. The New Fireboat will be named the John R. Frazier.

Here's another recent delivery that I have forgotten to add. Baltimore's New Mobile Command Unit, that they placed into service last year. This unit was a demo unit that The City purchased from Pierce.

On my way to work today, I passed the rest area on I-76 between Youngstown and Akron and darn near wrecked my car. There was Baltimore City's Rescue 1 being towed by a semi truck wrecker. They were heading Westbound on I-76.

Anyone know what happened to it?

I'll check my sources at the City shop, and see what I can dig up. That is odd though, I can't imagine what it would be out that way for, as the body was built by Rescue1,which I believe is in NJ, and if it's a Spartan Issue, I'm sure they would have gotten somebody localy to take care of the problem.

yfdgricker, I found the problem with Rescue 1 you saw on the Tow Truck, apparently they were heading back to Marion Mfg. for some issues, and developed other mechanical problems along the way. The tow truck was towing them to get the mechanical issues fixed, than they were to continue there journey to Marion.

Hungrybus, do you know what happened to the firehouse from "Ladder 49"? Is the city using it for anything? The production company spent all that money to rehab it. It would be a shame to waste.

Mack chassis as surplus after the war and the shops
converted them into service ladders using the once horse

The Ahrens-Fox pictured above is Baltimore's Engine 41, 1918 A-F Model K, Reg. # 682 shown in front ot E-41/T-20's quarters on Conkling St., Highlandtown.

The late William Murray wrote in his "Unheralded Heroes" that  at the close of WW1, 21 Mack trucks were bought from an Army surplus dealer in Philadelphia, Pa. They were driven to the BFD  repair shop in 3 groups of 7 each.

The chassis were used as hose wagons,(some were made into triple combinations later on with the addition of pumps), tractors for aerial ladders, and city service ladder trucks, as shown above.

Truck 20's ladder rack and chemical tanks most likely came from a horse drawn rig made by Charles T. Holloway Co., Baltimore Md.

A similar rig to T-20, (ex BFD T-24) is now on display at the Hall of Flame in Arizona.

This is from the National Run Survey done annually by FIREHOUSE Mag, these are from the June, 2010 issue, and may not reflect recent cuts.
36 eng,18 ladders, 24 BLS ambulances, 24 medic units, 1 Heavy rescue, 1 haz-mat, 1 fireboat, and 7 chiefs, staffing on suppression units is 4 each.
The old-time part of your question will take some time to research, the BCFD has been steadily trimmed for about 25 years now...

I'm not sure if this rig is 100% American LaFrance or not.  The wording on the captin leaves some doubt and the ladder racks don't look quite right to me for this to be an all-Elmira product.  Does anyone know if this is a horse drawn outfit mounted on a new chassis?

Engine 31-199? Sutphen

Probably taken during Firehouse Expo.
BCFD had 4 identical 1990 1250/750 Sutphens; orig. assignments were E8,14,24,31; last engines bought in orange.
After Chief Williams (Montel's father) took over c.1993, a slow program of repainting the orange on older rigs was started, but the Sutphens did not get done until mid- late 1990s (i.e., E8 was still orange in 4/1995 when I shot it.) (note: E14 was not repainted until 1998)
3 of the Sutphens were used in Ladder 49 movie, former E8 was movie E33, movie E13 was orig. E24. The cab of former E31 was used for rig interior shots only. All movie rigs were repainted at a body shop in PA. before filming started in spring,2003.

Baltimore's last Hayes aerial went out of 1st-line service in 1966. The last wood aerial of any type went out of 1st-line service in 1972.
All wood aerials were gone by mid-1970s.
BFD's Repair shop rebuilt all the Hayes aerials, starting in 1935, and continuing through the late 1930s, thus contributing to the long service lives.
Here is another photo of SL-17.  J. Atkinson photo, J. Floyd collection

This is the rig that was an Aero Chief.  The Snorkel is a Pitman and the bodywork is from Pierce.  Your guess on that paint is a possibility.  Back in those days, a popular primer was called "rust-oxide" and could have been used until the finish paint could be applied.

An inquiry to John Floyd brought the following reply:
Photo taken 5/31/1980 at a 2nd alarm response.
Rig had indeed been burned by radiant heat at a fire over the winter, repair shop had put back in service with primer applied. Later repainted and placed back in service as Trk.2.
Attached photo shows the Snorkel in 6/1979, then running as Water Tower 1. After the repairs in 1980, it would replace the Seagrave tiller to the left.
