Title: Federal funding running out...
Post by: YARBFD10 on February 12, 2015, 08:11:03 PM
WASHINGTON -
Time is running out on federal funding that pays for resources and equipment for more than 500 Ohio fire departments, including 34 here in the Valley.

Senator Sherrod Brown says that funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is set to expire at the end of the month.

The department provides grants to local fire departments to purchase new equipment, protective gear, and emergency vehicles.

Fire departments in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties have submitted applications totaling $6,829,783.

Brown says that if congress does not pass an extension of funding for DHS by Feb. 27, the resources would be delayed under a DHS shutdown.

The applications have been made through three federal programs – the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program, the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program, and the Fire Prevention & Safety Grant Program.

While funding decisions are scheduled to begin next month, Brown says that a DHS shutdown would delay the grants until the agency is funded.

Below is a county-by-countybreakdown of Assistance to Firefighters Grant applications for Fiscal Year 2014:

Some of these get hardly any funding anyway.

This should never happen as Firefighting department is also the backbone of the security of the city. But politics is politics.
