Theres word of the truck being high maint. but hey when you run a truck 24/7 its gonna need some TLC.   There is a rumor about how theres only one pierce...After 9-11 a wife who was cleaning out her husbands desk or locker found  blue prints of a rescue that was built using a pierce.  Not sure how true that is but its just one of many storys told.

I've heard that story too.  It is fact that Pierce donated the rig (or so I'm told).  That may be how they were able to build an FDNY spec'd rig.

I guess the fire fighter who was killed had designed the truck from top to bottom, made it more useful for the guys, wish I had someone like that in my dept.

F.D.N.Y. has an apparatus committee that meets regularly to discuss spec's for apparatus, what has worked well, what needs modification, what new needs may be forthcoming (ie: New / additional equipment storage requirements, etc..)? The committee includes representatives from: Repairs & Transportation, Safety Command, Support Services as well as Chiefs, Company Officers & Firefighters from the field. It's a good system that has served the department well.

The story you are referring to is that of Captain Terry Hatton of Rescue 1 who was killed on 9/11. He was working with the apparatus committee and created most of the specifications for the Pierce Rescue 1. The rig was being planned before his death and obviously finished afterword. I don't believe the story of his wife finding the drawings is accurate. This rig was being worked with FDNY management. In memory of Captain Hatton, the word 'Outstanding' was painted to the front of the rig. That was a common phrase uttered by Captain Hatton.

According to the first paragraph in the above link the rescues that Capt. Hatton helped design were Saulsburys built on cyclone chassis.
