ALF - Water Chief
« on: January 13, 2011, 09:21:33 AM »
The Water Chief had a pre-piped waterway and was available in 55'-100' lengths.  It was offered on custom and commercial chassis (single or tandem axle) as well as quint and straight truck configurations:

Bremen, IN
1983 Chevrolet/ALF #7700
1000/300/55'
Gas/?
(note that this shot was taken before any warning devices were installed)

Dryden, NY
1980 ALF #6614
1500/300/75'
Diesel/?
Truck 531

Dearborn, MI
1979 ALF #6374
1500/200/100'
Diesel/?

Unidentified 100-footer; note unusual location of the siren speaker.

No two alike...one of the things I enjoy most about our hobby:

Secaucus, NJ
1984 ALF #7815
50 (800psi)/300/100'
Diesel/?

Paterson, NJ
1981 ALF #7254
100'
Diesel/?
Truck 2

Keokuk, IA
1980 ALF #6582
2000/200/100'
Diesel/?
Ladder 1
(deck gun is unusual for a quint)

Thibodaux, LA
1983 ALF #7647
1250/300/100'
Diesel/?
Truck Pumper(?) 16
(note transverse life net box, vertically-mounted ground ladders)

Thank you for posting these!  The Keokuk truck has been showing up all over the place, kinda taunting me, LOL!

And that open cab Century is certainly interesting!  I've never seen one!

Is it just me, or does American LaFrance's designations of Ladder Chief, Aero Chief and Water Chief remind you of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad's "The Chief" "San Francisco Chief" and "Super Chief" passenger train names?

Each of these has a different type of mirrors:

West Elmira, NY
1984 ALF #7383
1500/300/75'
Diesel/?
Truck 2341

The WEFD's ALFs have all been replaced by Seagraves:

Chubbuck, ID
1982 ALF #7648
2000/300/75'
Diesel/?
Engine 6

Long Beach, CA
1981 ALF #7087
100'
Diesel/?

Phoenix, AZ
1981 ALF #7084
100'
Diesel/?

Sorry it took me so long to figure this one out.  I believe this is #6598, a 1978 Century open cab 102' Water Chief that went to Portland, ME.  I know I have seen a photo of it before, but I cannot locate it right now.

I have 6598 as a 1979 1500/500 pumper for Portland.  they did have a 1976 100' WC CE-12-5384.

Okay, looks like the info on the list "someone" gave me has errors, but I still think the rig in question went to Portland.  Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Dave,

Yes, you are correct. The rig in question is in deed Portland Maine. It was assigned to Ladder 4 in the Northgate scetion of the City. It later served as Ladder 1. Hope this helps!

One question, to be classified as a Water Chief the ladder had to have a pre piped waterway but no pump?

What I meant was is it still a Water Chief whether or not it has a pump?
