daysleeper, what year/make/model was 601? I would love to see a pic of it if you have one availiable. I think Akron only has one foam truck now.

Great pics. The Diamond T/Pirsch is a real treat. Diamond T always made a truck that looked like a truck.

You are sure right about the way the Diamond T's looked.  That's why I thought I'd post that on the Akron thread so everyone would see it.

Big thanks for these Buckeye! I'm actually in Akron (truck shopping).

So going by memory:

Springfield- The Diamond, Village of Lakemore, which is completely surrounded by Springfield had a DT very similar to this one and may have both been bought together. Lakemore/Springfield PD has merged and with the way things are economically. I figure the FD's are soon. Lakemore is most likely paid on call and STFD is paid.

Akron in no order- looks like a lot were shoot at #4 which was only a few years old around this time, and I'd guess the biggest station in the city at the time, hence all the various trucks.

T3 AFD had a few of these Pirsch/Duplex trucks (only 1 85')  One of these may be still around as a reserve? Least a few years ago one of them was. A Ziss refurb. One of them became L9 with the restructure years back.

Pirsch T3 was most likely the original, and a reserve at 4.

The ford ladder, don't ever think I seen this truck at a station. And if it's the truck I'm thinking of, an old friend and his dad are huge local buffs. His dad was a Goodyear FF till the collapse in the 80's. Anyway again, if that is the truck he mentioned it was a pretty much a lemon, very under powered.

E 15 - station 15 was closed years back, and is fire maintenance.

T4 became L10 till the Pierce was bought.

The squads were ran to death and I guess the idea never panned out. As they were never replaced and dropped.

The "old" foam truck was either a Ford or Chevy commercial cab and I just remember the huge fan on top of the back of it.

St 13 near my parents home had a ladder when I was a kid. (T5 - T13) One of the Pirsch/Duplex ladders. It became L8 when #8 on  Archwood was opened.

St 1 and St 3 were maybe a mile or two distance from each other. St 1 is now the Akron/Summit county Bar association. The bar incorporated the old fire station into the remodel of the building. Turned out really nice.

Again as a kid, dad had a close friend that was on AFD and we went down there often.  I remember the Snorkel, and engine, chief, and an old windowed van for sort of a rescue. Then the Sutphen tower, (which is still around). Years later a friend I worked with worked out of 1 when it was an engine and med unit only.

St 3 is engine med unit and the "downtown" station (along with 4)

Again just going from my 42 year old memory! St.2 is supposed to have some sort of little museum. Never checked it out.

2 new med units and an engine were order late last year/this year as well.

I rode with AFD in 1984-85 as part of paramedic school, mostly at Station 13 but also from Station 10.  The first day I went to Sta. 13, they had 601 as their Sutphen was OOS.  I don't know what the deal was, as they eventually got a reserve Pirsch engine, which remained there in reserve after the Sutphen came back.

By that time, AFD had changed the numbering system so that every unit at the same station had the same number.  Station 13 had four men assigned and the engine/medic were a combo unit, so while one was out the other was OOS.  I recall that during the day they often ran with three due to training that was going on. 

Station 10 had an engine, ladder, and med unit, all manned separately.  I think E12/M12 was a combo. 

The squads (2,3,4 IIRC) were still running at that time, but later on they were dropped with the exception of Squad 4, which became Rescue 4.  For a while before getting the larger rescue/hazmat truck, R4 had a newer version of the old four-door squads.

Stations 5 and 15 were closed.

Old station 5 was in the Akron U campus. It was also the fire garage. Akron U built the JAR where the st. sat.

St.5 is now in Ellet and has Tower 5 and Medic 5.

I did my medic ride time at 7 which was an engine and medic. And 9 which had an engine, ladder and medic. The engine and medic were cross manned.

Stations are 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14.

11 used to be on Massillon Rd. and now its a restaurant, or it was. 11 is the newest station and its in the "valley".

That is one large looking aerial - and your right that a 4-section would most likely be something larger than 75'.  My notes from that day show the aerial model designation as a 4S-75.  There couldn't have been many of these built!

I knew that if I drug my feet long enough, Box 2565 would step up to the plate with the info.  Box 2565 would normaly write down the info during the day and we would transcribe notes in the evening.  Whatever I have written down is what he had, unless I transposed a number or something.  I do know that errors were made on occasion on my part, but at least in this case, I had the correct info.  I, like many others, wish I had been more concerned with the rigs info way back when.  I'm glad that you like these threads.
