Turn of the Century Firehouse Decor - Picture Request
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:20:31 AM »
Hey Guys,
I am searching for photos of authentic firehouse decor from the turn of the century(or before).  I am planning on decorating my finished basement, and am looking for ideas.  I want to avoid the cliche' "paint everything fire engine red" look.  I have a few different ideas, just want to be sure I am on the right track.  Thanks in advance.

Take a look in the Museum section of this forum and look at some of the old fire house buildings in stead of the stuff.

For the 1910's, teens, 20's & 30's beaded ceiling or bead board used as a wainscot may give you the look you want. Plus it comes in plywood sheets and can be cut in half or thirds. You can still get tin ceiling from the W.F. Norman Co. (may require a bank loan) or if you have suspended ceiling you can use "looks like tin" tile. Usually a special order item. Look for old style light fixtures too. Hanging lights if you have the ceiling height.

The rest is decorating with F.D. stuff. If you have posts wrap them with fire hose. Photos of old trucks framed for the walls. Axes, pike pole, turn out coat, old helmets & chalk board are some other examples.  On the chalk board write " PLUGS OOS", "ENGINE - OUT- IN", WATER TOWER... you get the idea. As I'm sure you know e-Bay has all kinds of vintage F.D. advertizing for sale that is not too expensive.  Also look for "fireman certificate" and see what turnes up.

Good luck!
