I know its been done before does anyone know how to do it.? I think I got it figured out I just need to know what type of relay to use.

You need a normally closed relay. I.E. when the coils of the relay are NOT energized the contacts are CLOSED. You may have to get a relay that has both NC and NO contacts. Just follow the diagram for it. This will maintain the closed circuit needed for your gong. I don't remember what the output voltage is on the Minitor charger base alert connections but the relay coil needs to be the same voltage. When the Minitor trips it will energize the relay and open the gong circuit much like a stroke key. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have trouble.

Which minitor model will you be using -  II, III, V?
I put together a 120v light that came on with a Minitor II Amplifier when that went into alert.  The light stayed on till the reset button was pressed on the amplifier, it was convenient at night.

A bell is a little more tricky but probably can be done with parts from Radio Shack.

We have Minitor 5's with the amplified base charger, with the 6 pin on the back. Please advise, or post how to wire a light and/or a gamewell gong into this. Both are needed in my station.
Thanks

I need to know the wiring diagram for the output plug. Do you have a manual for the charger base ?

Just looked everything up on the net. Give me a day or so and I'll post a wiring diagram for everybody.

Hi Guys,
After researching the net and talking to a Motorola tech I am in the process of designing a circuit diagram to produce a single stroke on a municipal fire alarm gong and trip some lights. Please understand that this will be a basic schematic and there can be a lot of variables depending on individual needs and equipment.
Some examples of this would be klaxtons or vibrating bells, lighting up an entire station etc. For those of you that had municipal systems a variation of this could be used on your old trip light switches, gongs, registers and air horns if you had them.
Please give me some time as I want to build this circuit in my shop first to make sure it works correctly. When I confirm that I will post it here with pictures and written directions. If anyone would like to PM me about a specific application please do so. Thanks.

Hi Guys,
Thought I would give a little update. I am trying to build this from parts you can get at Radio Shack so anyone can build this. So far I have been able to do that with a few issues on maintaining as close to 100 mills as possible on the gong circuit. Radio Shack doesn't have a great variety of parts to make it adjustible. I cannot drop the voltage from the power supply to produce the 100 mills as the relay needed operates on 12 volts and depending on how many alarm apparatus you put on the gong circuit (i.e. register, indicator, etc.) I can't just drop the voltage to get the correct current. I think I've got that answered and I have it set up with A LOT of jumpers. It's been running for several days now because I want to make sure things don't burn out. Once I'm happy with that I will put the whole thing together in a project box and post building it. Thanks for the patience.

OK Guys,
Here we go. First the charger base. From talking to a Motorola tech the connectiions on the back of an amplified charger base w/ alert jack are the same for all versions of the Minitor. Here they are :

Pins 1 and 6 are for a remote speaker
Pins 2 and 3 are for the trip relay
Pins 4 and 5 are for relay timing (If jumpered relay resets when pager is reset. If not jumpered relay resets in 10 seconds.)

Parts List. All Items are from Radio Shack.
     Power Supply   # 273-315
     DC Power Jack  # 274-1563
     Relay Socket    # 275-0020
     Relay              # 275-0218
     25ohm Rheostat #271-0265
     100ohm Resistors #271-1108
     Barrier Strip 6    #274-659
     Project Box      #270-1807
     Small Extension Cord

I hope the drawing and the pictures will help everyone figure out how to put this together. I had problems keeping the gong circuit close to 100 mills because I had to maintain 12vdc for the relay. You will notice there are 3 connections for the gong circuit. C is common and always used. # 1 is to be used for one gong or one gong and a box if you are running a display with this also. # 2 uses the rheostat and should be used if you have more than two pieces of alarm equipment running off of this supply. Start with the lowest setting that works. As you add equipment you may have to turn up the mills so everything works correctly. I would have built in a meter but RS doesn't make one. I paralled two 100 ohm resistors instead of using one 47 ohm resistor because the 47 ohm burn't the hell out of my fingers. The 100s get warm but don't burn. Paralled resistance is about 50 ohms. Good for longevity. The red/yellow and black/yellow wires in the pictures go to the power supply jack. Red on the center pin. You may want to stick a small fuse in line with the power supply.
This set up should work with any type of station monitor (plectron, GE, etc.) as long as the trip relay is a dry contact (no output voltage). If you are thinking about buildiing one of these for a fire station I would use the heavier Potter and Brumfield relay and socket. PN # KRPA-11DG-12 and socket PN # 27E122.
I'm sure there will be questions so ask them here so everyone can see. If you have a special application and need help PM me and we will work on it. I hope this is what you were looking for. The pictures are in the next posting.

      This drawing is corrected.

So, if you run just a gong, you hook up to C &#1, and don't need the rheostat?

How does the light circuit shut off?

THANKS FOR YOUR HARD WORK!

If you jumper pins 4 and 5 light circuit shuts off when you reset the pager. If you don't jumper 4 and 5 they will shut off in 10 seconds. If you want traditional station trip lights you need a timer set up for that. Yes, C and # 1 for just a gong.
