North Star EMS paramedics Rob Moore and Christine LeRussi transport West Point firefighter Tina Williams to East Liverpool City Hospital after she was overcome by smoke while fighting a trailer fire at 17421 Cannons Mills Road. The trailer, owned by Cindy Latham, was engulfed when firefighters arrived and was a complete loss. Exploding ammunition and a steep muddy lane leading to the property prevented firefighters from getting close to the scene quickly. Grass trucks and an old army six-wheeler was used to reach the scene.

WEST POINT - The cause of the fire Saturday afternoon that destroyed a house trailer and injured two firefighters remains under investigation.

West Point Fire Chief Wayne Chamberlain said Saturday night, county fire investigators remained at the scene at 17421 Cannons Mill Road, still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

The house trailer, owned by Cindy Latham, was "pretty well down" when firefighters arrived. Sitting well back, up a hill and in a pasture field, firefighters had to bring in brush trucks to better fight the blaze. West Point brought in its own brush truck, along with brush vehicles from Glenmoor and Calcutta. Lisbon firefighters were placed on call.

Chamberlain said a lot of ammunition was being stored in the home, because firefighters could hear it firing from the heat of the fire as they approached. Hay bales sitting near the home also ignited from the fire.

Two West Point firefighters were injured. Tina Williams was transported due to smoke inhalation and Aaron Larson injured his back.

A busy day for firefighters, West Point's department was already out finishing a call about a carbon monoxide detector issue when the house trailer call came in Saturday afternoon. Another call on state Route 7 later was handled by Glenmoor firefighters.

Some other fire reports from around the county included:

- Leetonia firefighters were called to Woodville Road in Fairfield Township Saturday afternoon after there were fears a fire in a small wooded area would reach an oil tank, according to Fire Chief Ken Garlough. The fire did not reach the tank. Prior to that, Garlough said his department had a burning complaint.

-A barn fire was reported Saturday morning in the Columbiana area, but no further information was available Saturday night from the fire department.
