Looking for Help
« on: January 04, 2008, 10:19:29 AM »
Hello everyone!  I have just purchased a 1929 Chevrolet  Fire Truck that I would like to restore.  Would anyone know a good source to look for photos of original 1929 Chev. Trucks.  I think there is some "after-market" additions to the truck and I would like to compare photos.  There is no pump and I do not know the original manufacturer of the truck.  Any info that could assist me in restoring this truck with a pump and original equipment would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Do you know where the truck served originally?  If you'll post some photos here, we can all have a look and maybe give you some good advice.

Steve,

I recommended the site to Brad, so I don't think he'll mind me posting that he knows it was purchased new by the Medford, Oklahoma FD in 1929.

They have a (very) few photos of their older rigs up on a wall; the next time I'm through there, I'll look for this truck.  If there is an in-service photo of it, I'll get it scanned and posted here.

We'd still like to see how she looks today, no matter how rough...?

That would be great!  I have some photos that I will try and post.  It was sitting outside so it has some snow on it.  I will try to get some "snow free" pics soon.  My grandfather was the fire chief in Medford for several years and just recently passed away so this truck is extra special and I want to do it right..  I still have family there and they are going to try to help in the research.

Thanks in advance.

Well sorry guys, the picture files are to big for the post.  The smallest is 436kb and the post will only allow 200kb.  If you would like to see them send me your email address to mvfd@mchsi.com and i will send them to you to look at.

Thanks,

Brad

Here are some other 1929 Chevy Pics I found on the web...

#1 - Bradford NH, 1929 Chevy

#2 - 1929 Chevrolet Suburban Fire Pumper from East Granby, CT
This was the first apparatus purchased by the East Granby Volunteer Fire Department. The truck was in service from 1929 until 1972.  The truck was restored in 1976 and is now used at shows and parades.

#3 - Peoria, AZ. Apparently they have a 1929 Chevy which was restored by Wilhelm Automotive (http://wilhelmauto.com)

Thanks for the up load and additional pics.  I am open to any advice or comments on my pics about what could be missing or where it might go.

Thanks,

In 1929 when a town bought a new fire truck it was a BIG deal. Check with the library in the area and see if they have back issues of the local newspaper. They usually are on microfilm and can be copied easily and inexpensively. I' d bet you will find a photo of your truck when it was new. Good luck.

MVFire,

Just wondering if you were able to find any addiional photos or other information regarding your apparatus?  I might be able to point you in the direction of some photos of similar rigs, however I'm wondering if you have located a tag or other logo identifying the name of the company that built the apparatus body for your pumper?  Let me know and I'll see what I can do.  Good luck on your restoration and please check the link with my signature to the SPAAMFAA web site.

Take care,

Steve

Unfortunately I have looked everywhere for any kind of ID tag.  I cannot find anything.  My grandmother lives in the town where it came from and is still diligently searching for newspaper articles from the local paper on microfilm.  I just recently brought it home and before I did I drove it through the town hoping to bring up some memories.  I parked it on a busy street and had a few people come to me and say they remembered the truck but their stories were different.  I was fortunate enough to locate and take into possession the original title for the vehicle.  It was purchases January 24, 1930 for $500.00.  Thanks for the offers of help.  I am still searching and will let you know if something new comes up.
