If I were a betting man I'd have to say that it means the box is auxilarized. A master box connected to the college named on the card.
Thanks for the reply.  Maybe you should take up gambling as I believe you're right about the "X".  I checked the other cards that I have from Buffalo and all of those that have an "X" before the box number are factories or institutions.  The cards seem to have quite a few variations on the alarm assignments.

Box X1776 - L.V. Depot (Lehigh Valley RR), Dingens & South Ogden

Box X1778 - Ranahan - McCarthy, Fuhrmann Blvd. No. of Mich.

I still have a question about the AUX in the apparatus assignment colum. The X before the box number means a private box. Right?  I got that. On one card AUX is included on first alarm in the response column, but it is on the second alarm assignment on the others? I just don't understand having an AUX column included with apparatus to respond.

I also have some Hartford, CT cards from the 1930s or 40s which have  a "0" on them. I have a full set and each tenth card has a zero in the number? How can that be?

Thanks

A 0 in a box number is actually 10 strokes. Box 20 would be 2 strokes followed by 10 strokes per round. My guess on the AUX on the running card is some type of specialized apparatus. Light truck, water tower, hose tender, rescue, salvage etc.

The first three photos show street boxes at Hornell, New York while the last photo is the box on the front of the North Hornell, New York fire station.  The Hornell boxes are Gamewell while the North Hornell is a Northern Electric.  Note the extremely low height of Box 15.  Pictures taken on August 2, 2005.

Box 6 -   Main & Broadway (System was being removed from service, hence the tape)
Box 14 - Genesee & Seneca
Box 15 - Genesee & Adsit

Travelling through New York state this past week, it was nice to see systems in Cortland and Penn Yan.

However it appeared like Canadiagua has removed their system.

Also has Buffalo pulled theirs?? I was at SUNY Buffalo , at this building, and saw the "outline" of the firebox on the side of the building and didn't notice any pedistals.

I see where Oswego used to have a box system, but clearly long gone.

As of last summer, Buffalo still had boxes on the street. I stopped on the way through to get a picture of Box 29, the famed Hoodoo box.
