American Lafrance - Patriot
« on: April 09, 2007, 09:57:52 PM »
Most buffs think the JO/JOX models were ALF's ugliest.  Not me...I think the Patriot was their worst, practically as well as aesthetically.  How 'bout those blind spots at the "A" pillars (front cab corners)?  Wicked!

Miami, OK
Engine 6
1994 ALF #2147
Diesel/automatic
1500/500/50

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire E20 1750/500 ?. I think Pgh had four Patriots with two still in service.

Credit to the photographer.

The chassis on the Patriot is actually an HME chassis.

How good/bad were these trucks?  Personally I think that these...things...would rank very highly on the "America's Ugliest Fire Truck" list; and, at least to me, make even the first generation Metros look good.  Were these rigs as bad in service as they were ugly or were they a case of function over form?

The one complaint I heard about the Pgh Patriots is that the rear cab doors opened toward the street inside of swinging open toward the middle of the truck. Other then that i never heard anything else.

I thought the Patriot was built on a Pemfab chassis.

Sounds like a good truck to have in your fleet then.  Ugly, but reliable.

Correct; cab and chassis were Pemfab.  They're still in business, but no longer build fire apparatus (Imperial) or chassis/cabs:

Here's an opposite view of the same truck, taken by Dick Adelman at a conference in Cleveland, OH on 7/10/92.  As you can see it had hinged doors on one side and rollups on the other.

Having never been sold, I believe this is the one that is still part of the ALF collection.  I saw it on a plant visit in 1999.
