Gamewell House Gongs

This is a standard Gamewell 6" gong.  These were used in fire stations, and sometimes in the personal residence of the fire chief or other official.

This is my Gamewell indicator gong.  The piece is in excellent condition.  I wish I knew what fire station it had served!

This is a well-preserved example of an alarm device that did not require electrical energy. Instead, the clapper striking the gong was driven by a weight similar to those used in mechanical "grandfather" clocks.

This is an Antique Gamewell Fire Alarm bell, from the West Coast. It is about 52” in total height. The Gong/Bell is 14 ½” in diameter and it is about 9 ¼” deep. On most normal Fire Alarm Bells, there would be an series of three numbers as an “indicator”. This bell has are coded “wheels” for several different boxes. As it has wheels for different boxes, this bell could have been in an alarm or control room of the fire stations or possibly in a headquarters for the Fire Department.

This gong sold on eBay 09/14/06 for $2,850.75.  I was surprised by the price as I thought it would have been higher.

A portion of the description from the ad: This is one of 4 firefighting collectibles we are selling this week.  All of them from Boston Fire Dept.  Engine Company #12.   All from the same period circa 1890.

Large 8.5" bell telegraph system signed THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO.NEW YORK  Like the other firefighting  items we are selling today this one is in superb untouched, uncleaned original condition. Signed inside on the works Pat. May 26, 1891. It is heavy at about 16 lbs and measures22" long and 11" wide. A very attractive piece with the walnut case and large bell.
