This scene shows construction of the Cincinnati subway system (never completed) on June 10, 1921. The subway was being built in the bed of the former Miami and Erie canal. On the right side of the photo is Stark Street. There is a street box on a pedestal where Stark and the canal meet.
University of Cincinnati collection.

Here's another photo of the intersection of Stockton and Sutter in San Francisco. The picture was taken in 1958 and shows an old style fire alarm box. These ornate boxes were typically found only in the high value areas of downtown. They were not used in residential or industrial areas of the city. Contrast this box with the newer boxes shown in earlier posts. (Look on page 4 of this thread.) All of these ornate boxes are gone now except for one in the Fire Department Museum.

Restored Mack B at Newark NJ Muster 6/6/2010. Box is 2137, Broad and Lombardy Streets. At the time said to be the LAST working street box in the city.
