YFD lease/purchase
« on: January 03, 2006, 06:11:31 PM »
as of today yfd is thinking in terms of requesting a single triple combination pumper from the new administration

if approved it would be quartered at west side station 3 when acquired

subsequently no3 would get a new quint at a later time

the shop favors a model like s33-enforcer series

it is unkown if chief will approve of that

nor is it known if chief will rewrite specs or use present pumper specs

possibly updated specs r in the offing

this modest request will determine the disposition of the new adminstrations attitude toward the yfd's needs for heavy duty fire apparatus

also it is uncertain what will be the fate of the present tsqt if it will be decomissioned or not in view of the dire situation in the spare pool of trucks

my personal opinion here is that new rig should go to 7's

and 7's to 3

this way the tin cans that were obtained in 2002 mite have a chance at lasting a few years

latest from the rumormill is that yfd will ask for quint and then change request instead for 2 triple combinations possibly new sabers with cat diesel engines superior to the98s that r underpowered detroits and dont do steep hills well

as far as assignments i am guessing 3eng and anybody care to venture where the other will go?

one knowledgeable source thinks 7 should get a new rig owing to many runs

pierce has paid a visit to yfd
currently yfd is looking at 2 sabers
all stainless steel
said to be superior to aluminum and a bit costlier
my guess on assignments if these units r obtained
engs 3,7
ex-7 to 12
ex-12 to 15
15 to spare
12 has been tested at 15 and fits shoehorn style

A No-penalty Date of Delivery has been scheduled for January 15,2007  for 2 new Pierce / Contender pumpers to be manufactured in Bradenton, Florida ; contract signed and sealed between YFD and Pierce Manufacturing.

The specs are no-frills bare-bottom spartan in nature...

1] flat roofs

2] ladder on side not hydraulicly lifted

3] no air conditioning in the cabs

5] boosters are 500 gwt NOT 750 gwt as were previous 2002 Contenders

6] Cat engines

7] 1250gpm pumps waterous

8] uncertain whether compartments are roll-ups or not

9] stainless steel bodies NOT aluminum as previous 6 apparatus purchases

non- yfd source suggested engs 2 & 7 as the slated recipients

also engs 12 and 3 as recipients of the 2002 hand-me-downs

the 98 sabers to engs 15 and of course 6 which already has one

the 89 telesqurt pierce arrow to reserve presumably

the present eng 15 1987 dash to eng 9 presumably

present dash 9 to reserve

i had thought eng 3 was promised a brand new one even if they are slated to eventually receive a full-size quint later

the cost of the new trucks is unkown

also the lease term is either 7 or 10 years

dAYSLEEPER47:

Keep this also in mind:
For the very 1st time under this chief...
These trucks are NOT being covered by Block Grants or CD=community development as the last 6 have been since 1998....

That fund has dried up for YFD at least...
So now the payments for the trucks either 7 or 10 years terms will be GF=general funds

Originally the news at year's beginning reported one new rig in the works for this year= quint for no3.

But soon the deal changed to 2 rigs triple comb and to equal the one quint probabaly required severe drastic measures as to not go over the equivalent cost of the quint.

Wonder what will happen when a new Quint for 3's or new Tower for 24's comes around?

In a back page of the Warren Tribune in the local section is a pic of new Eng 7's rig and next to it not visible is new Eng 2's truck. It says in the caption that they cost $230,000 ea and that the existing apparatus at those stations was to be shipped to other stations.

Original delivery was slated for Jan 15, 2007...

Sorry to relate but.....
Pierce standard options are all priced at $7,000 a pop...
so...
a few hundred won't do......
why they charge 7 grand........
well....
it appears easier to calculate the cost of a prospective sale when the price can be arrived at instantly versus a longer wait.....

This is guesswork on my part as regards re-assignments of apparatus now that the new Pierce Sabers have been delivered as reported above in the Warren Tribune.

Am guessing that:

2002 Pierce Custom Contender Eng7 will go to Eng 12

2002 Pierce Custom Contender Eng 2 will go to Eng 3

1998 Pierce Saber Eng 12 to Eng 15

1989 Pierce Arrow 50ft Telesqurt Eng 3 to reserve for now until a new station is built for Eng 9

1987 Pierce Dash Eng 15 to Eng 9 for now till a new station is built

Possibly the telesqurt may be eventually assigned to new station 9 but if the cost to rehab this aged and worn unit is excessive then maybe the  more intact 1987 Pierce Dash Eng 15 will go to Eng 9 on a permanent basis till the next time pumpers are added to the fleet. Seems like the next logical acquisition would be the quint for Eng 3 so that the 2002 Pierce Custom Contender that will be going there would later move on to new station 9

Since when was the Tribune more on the ball about YFD new trucks arriving than the Vindicator?

These are my best guesses.....

Also 2 Mack MC ''garbage'' trucks --1980-81 and 1982 will be going to the garbage unless one of them is spared as a ''spare'' ......hehe

The Youngstown Vindicator has three photos on the front pageof their local section on Friday 12/29. They can be seen at http://www.youngstownfire.com/galleryhpa/index.php?gallery=.%2F2006-12-29+-+Vindy+Pics++New+Apparatus

I had them all beat because I got word of the new deliveries and had photos on my site on Dec 13th. :)

WKBN TV27 also did a short news segment on the new deliveries on Thu morning.

Since Tony's demise and my ouster from the shop by Capt K my sole source for data has been a contact from Finleyfire and he is not always very accurate so what I hear I pass along. Also my contact is virtually unavailable for me to keep updated ever since the  shop lost its chiwawa and got a rotwiler.

Greg:

In reviewing some of your pics of the rigs it seems that they are not on a long-wheel-base like the '98 Sabers are so these new ones are essentially the same size as the 2002 Contenders presumably.

On another note:
Portaland , Oregon has ordered 5 new Velocity pumpers and 1 new Velocity platform. Sure hope they like 'em coz so far I am still not impressed at least from an apparatus buff's perspective. Too bad a great American fire service tradition is slowly being eliminated ---namely handsome rigs-and ugly trucks like those that cover all Europe and the third world nations' departments .

Interestingly in England they weren't responding any aerial devices on any alarms regardless of the natire of the structure be it low or be it high -rise but instead aerials were special call status all around.

So they go by number of pumps rather than our 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc alarms....4 pump resonse....then 8 pump....12 pumps....16 pump....20 pump....24 pump...
.28 pump....and the highest I've seen is 32 pump.

The Queen's castle had 35 ''appliances''=euphemisim for trucks in the UK...
so I wonder if that was 32 pumps plus a few aerials??

Brief history of the Saber model:

1st delivery was 1992 to Baltimore Eng 30

2nd was Cortland, Ohio

end-game scenarios:

have read

1] EPA will allow no further non-compliant engines to be used for fire vehicles after

Dec 31, 2006

2] Also read that they will allow older non-compliant '06 engines to be used till the supply owned by the manuafcturers is exhausted

latter scenario seems more reasonable

military vehicles are exempt completely from EPA emissions regulations

why then not fire and police?

maybe becoz there are too many fire trucks and not enuff military ?
