Just when I thought Berkeley had done away with all its street boxes and covered the hooks on its master boxes over 20 years ago I came across  at least a half a dozen boxes (both stand alone and master boxes with hooks) on the eastern side of UCB. They are  on or near Gayley Dr. and I have no idea why they weren't put O.O. S. with the rest  but relish in the nostalgia.

Hi,

First, welcome to the Forums!  Happy to read your first post.  I think it's fascinating that these boxes have survived for such a long period of time after the system was removed.  Would you happen to have a photo or two of these "relics" of the system while they're still in place?

I did not have a camera with me and live over 200 miles away from Berkeley now. I will attempt to get some photos. I did pull a Berkeley fire box as a child in the 1970's when I suffered a heavy bleeding head injury from a rock thrown at me by some young thugs.

The information that came with this photo (and I don't recall where I grabbed this) is that Box 2174 in Los Angeles is about to come in!

This box was located at 3rd & Hill Streets in Downtown Los Angeles next to the Angels Flight funicular (I had to look up the definition too - it's a railway operated with a counter balance, these were called inclines in this area).

Actress Lana Turner was supposedly "discovered" while sitting sipping a soda in a drug store on Hollywood Blvd.  This 1965 photo shows the infamous intersection of Hollywood & Vine in Los Angeles.  It takes good eyesight, but if you look carefully beneath the "Don't Walk" sign you will see a little red box!

On the left in this photo is a Jaguar XKE that will soon be pulling Up on the Right at Sunset & Vine.
Suddenly I'm in the mood for some 60's tunes & a cherry phosphate :)  Nice bus, too.

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions!
What do you mean "biblical"?
What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor. Real wrath of God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, and volcanos! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

Take it easy, I used to date Cherry P!  I would take her out in my Stingray late at night.  For those of you younger than 50 our rambling will never make sense.  Want answers?  Go down to Dead Man's Curve and ask Jan and Dean....  Happy New Year!

The Engine Company I used to be a Vollie on was real fine. It's radio callsign was 409. 8)
It had a climate controlled cab. Whatever the climate was outside, that's what it was in the cab.  ;)
You guys keep on rambling with pics and memories like these.
