New 103' Quint on order from Crimson Fire.  Will have a 1500gpm pump and a 500 gallon tank.  It is a demo unit and was considerably cheaper.  Rig will replace 2 companies at Station No. 1, eliminating Engine Co. No. 1 and Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1.  Will be designated Truck Co. No. 1.  Current Engine No. 1 (2005 Sutphen) will be re-assigned to Engine Co. No. 3.  1990 75' Pierce Lance Quint will be sold along with 1985 Sutphen pumper.  2002 Spartan/Ferrara 105' aerial moved to reserve status.  The purchase of this quint will make the drop in manning permanent.  Manning drops from 24 per day to 20.

Just because you have a paramedic card, doesn't mean you know how to fight fire.  It takes more than rubber gloves.

Pics of the new quint for LFD.  Can't say I approve 100%, but the decision was out of our hands.

From the Crimson website.

I'm not sure...  It is the demo unit we are buying.  So it could have been all over the country and already have thousands of miles and hundreds of hours already.

A sad day in Lakewood, I hope no brothers lost their jobs.  What will the manning at Station one be.  Seems like a huge station to only have 1 fire company running out of.

New mayor arrived in town last January...  Had to balance the budget.  No layoffs, but we were threatened.  No overtime allowed to reach 24 minimum manning.  We run with what we have unless we have fewer than 20.  Then overtime will be paid.

24 men on duty

E-1 with 4
H&L with 4
SQ1 with 2
C2 with 2
E-2 with 4
SQ2 with 2
E-3 with 4
SQ3 with 2

23-22 men on duty

E-1 with 4
H&L with 5 or 4
SQ1 with 2
C2 with 2
E-2 & SQ2 become combination company with 4 members
E-3 with 4
SQ3 with 2

21-20 men on duty

E-1 & H&L become combination company with 4 members - Eng 1 no longer responds on EMS calls at this level.
SQ1 with 2
C2 with 2
E-2 with 4 (Becomes BLS engine co. in stead of Eng 1)
SQ2 with 2
E-3 with 4
SQ3 with 2

Probable alignment with delivery of quint:

Station 1

Truck No. 1 - 4 members
Squad No. 1 - 2 members
Car 2 - 2 members

Station 2

Engine 2 - 4 members
Squad 2 - 2 members

Station 3

Engine 3 - 4 members
Squad 3 - 2 members

Stopped in at work the other day.  Looks like the 1990 Pierce Lance 75' quint has gotten a fork stuck in it.  Engine Co. 3 was running with the 1985 Sutphen (Eng. 5) and my captain said they got an estimate for the quint to get repaired and the Chief doesn't want it to get fixed.  Sorry I never got pics of the quint on here, as I have been assigned to Station 3 for the better part of 3 years.  As soon as the new quint arrives, Engine Co. 3 will be getting the 2005 Sutphen.

New chief took over LFD the first of the year.  Also new mayor in town to replace former mayor who is now the Cuyahoga County executive (took over for Jimmy DeMora).

New chief would like to implement an FDNY style "Squad Company" at Station No. 2 on Detriot at Kenilworth.  Currently LFD has highest daily manpower levels in Cleveland's west shore suburbs.  Would like us to be more valuable to these communities including Lakewood.  I guess he already has a Sutphen Shield Series 4 rescue pumper on his wish list for Engine Co. 2.  Like all things these days, progess costs tax dollars.  :-\

In 1919 a major fire occured at the Edgewater Lumber Company and City Council decided to add 7 men to the department.

While doing some research on some other fires in Northeast Ohio, I came across this clipping from the December 5th, 1919 edition of a local newspaper that talks about the fire mentioned above. It sounds like the local citizens did quite a bit to help out, a lot more then I would expect them to do today. Do I sound old or what? Don't answer that...  :P
