Boardman Business Bursts Into Flames
Dick Skelton

Fire lit up the night sky in Boardman just before midnight Monday night.

Firefighters found an old batching plant on fire where Boardman Concrete used to make cement but it is not being torn down for scrap metal.

"We had a little problem with one of the hydrants," says Boardman Fire Chief Jim Dorman, "we couldn't get it open last night. We laid about 2,000 foot of four inch hose up into the property here and between our two ladder trucks. It took about an hour to an hour and a half to put it out then."

The owner of Boardman Supply said the property is under option to an Akron developer interested in commercial development here. The property itself has not been used since last July.

The old batching plant was being cut up for salvage and a truck containing tanks of cutting gasses is still in the building at ground level.

"There's some pretty serious gas tanks down on the first floor. We're very fortunate that the fire never got down at that level."

The Chief and a fire inspector looked over the building from a snorkel truck. The building is considered too dangerous to go into right now. They were looking for the cause of the fire, but so far have not found it.

Fire Scene too Dangerous for Investigation

Boardman

We may never know what caused a fire at a longtime Boardman business.
Flames broke out at the Boardman Supply Company on Southern Boulevard late Monday night.

Firefighters decided the building was too dangerous to enter, so they're leaving the cause undetermined.

The building was in the process of being demolished.
