Just because you have a paramedic card, doesn't mean you know how to fight fire. It takes more than rubber gloves.

Witness runs into fire for victims
Tribune Chronicle | 10/3/2004
WARREN - After discovering a house ablaze on East Avenue, a Warren man said he jumped out of his vehicle, asked bystanders if everyone got out and then decided to see for himself.
"I just did what any normal person that is able to do would do,'' said Bill Hernandez, as he stood outside the home Sunday afternoon, still covered in soot and gasping between words.
Everyone in the home at 1094 East Ave. had escaped before the fire reached the top level and caused significant damage, while also spreading to destroy the bordering shed. The fire erupted shortly before 7 p.m., and fully engulfed the two-story home and adjacent shed.
Hernandez, 51, said neighbors told him they thought everyone had escaped but didn't provide a solid answer.
"Well I wasn't taking that 'I think so,''' Hernandez said.
After making his way to the upstairs level, Hernandez, a certified medical assistant, said he could see no occupants and fled the house.
A Warren Fire Department investigator was on the scene assessing the damage, as several firefighters battled the blaze and maintained the scene with trucks stationed on neighboring Niles Road.
Witnesses said children playing near the home caused the blaze when they accidentally lit a blanket on fire.
Sgt. Joe O'Grady of the Warren Police Department said it isn't likely the children will be charged because of their age, but they could be ordered to attend fire safety class.

Fire Department to hold open house
Tribune Chronicle | 10/2/2004
WARREN - The Warren Fire Department will host an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. today to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, which begins Sunday.
The open house will be held at the Central Fire Station, 111 South St. S.W.
Firefighters will give tours of the station and equipment, perform auto extrications and give children the opportunity to spray water from a fire hose. The Fire Safety Trailer, a tool to teach children safety tips such as making 911 calls, checking hot doors and crawling under smoke to safety, also will be available.
The Warren Police Department will be fingerprinting kids and handing out child identification kits, and the department's K-9 unit will give a demonstration.

From the Warren Tribune Chronicle on 10/31/2004...
Parades draw people to streets
WARREN - A break in the cool fall weather brought hundreds of local residents out to enjoy a warm Sunday afternoon on the streets of downtown Warren for the city's annual Halloween parade.
The Warren G. Harding Band kicked off the celebration at 2 p.m. decked out in an array of costumes, but they weren't the only ones dressed up.
Young and old used the parade as another reason to pull out their favorite Halloween costumes again after Thursday night's trick or treat in the city.
Next, the Warren Fire Department featured its trucks and firefighters as various other local participants meandered along the route behind.
Bands, safety officials and area organizations threw out their stashes of candy to eager children lining the sidewalks around Courthouse Square.
But the adults weren't forgotten in the procession, as many supporters of local political candidates were present to give their messages.
Yard signs, stickers and various other political treats were distributed in support of each presidential candidate, while several local candidates had vehicles in the parade reminding voters to make it to the polls Tuesday.
The scene was repeated in the cities of Niles and Newton Falls, which also held annual Halloween parades Sunday afternoon.

From the Warren Tribune Website on 12/2/2004.
City faces $24 million lawsuit
By RON SELAK JR. Tribune Chronicle
WARREN - A downtown building owner is suing the city for millions of dollars, claiming the Police and Fire departments were harassing him and his employees by issuing parking tickets for vehicles parked in his alley.
Robert Cregar, owner of 144 N. Park Ave. and a section of an alley between this property and the neighboring Comfort Inn, filed the action Tuesday against the city, its Police and Fire departments, fire Chief Ken Nussle and Capt. Curtis C. King.
Cregar is seeking $24 million in the case, which has been assigned to Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Logan.
A second plaintiff, Dwayne Lacey, whose address also is listed at 144 N. Park Ave., is seeking $25,000 because, according to the suit, his vehicle suffered damage caused by Warren when it was towed from the alley.
Law Director Gregory V. Hicks declined to comment. John H. Large, attorney for Cregar and Lacey, could not be reached for comment.
The six-page suit claims a series of incidents against Cregar, including personal threats and threatened physical violence, the issuance of more than 20 parking tickets and harassing and threatening notes left on Cregar's vehicle.
Warren Mayor Michael J. O'Brien called the suit absurd.
"In my 23 years as an elected official and serving the public, I've never seen such a ridiculous lawsuit,'' O'Brien said. "There are lawsuits, and there are lawsuits, and this one is ridiculous.
"The issues will be discussed in court, but that is utterly ridiculous.''
The suit states that before filing the action, the city began issuing tickets to Cregar and his employees parked in the alley. Within a week after Cregar contacted the city, the suit states Warren installed a sign stating that the alley was a fire lane.
The alley was designated a fire lane according to city ordinance and the Ohio Fire Code to provide a way for people to exit in an emergency. The Comfort Inn has a banquet room that exits into the alley.
The suit stated that when confronted by Cregar in the alley, city employees refused to give their name or department information, and the last occurrence happened Monday.
It states that during a meeting called by Warren Municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak, all sides established that Warren had "improperly attempted to take'' Cregar's property, and the Law Department agreed the property was not a fire lane.
The judge ordered all activity to stop toward Cregar, the suit states; however, the Fire Department continued leaving handwritten notes on the vehicles of the employees. It states that Warren also refused to remove the fire lane sign.
Nussle declined to comment. Ivanchak could not be reached to comment about the meeting or any written order allowing vehicles to park in the alley/fire lane.
