Based on the response that the new Pierce rigs won't be able to be located in several of the Youngstown houses, I was wondering if their were any plans for replacing any of the existing stations?

The fire chief has met with an architect to discuss a new station 9 on the city's southeast side of town. If the convocation center gets built at the site of the current downtown firehouse and bus station, either a new downtown station will have to be built or units moved to outlying stations. The city has been in the position of having no downtown station before so if there is no downtown station again it will be nothing new. There was talk a long time ago towards the end of the previous administration about combining stations 1 and 7 in a new building but that is no longer on the table right now.

Actually several new stations are in order though it is unlikely that they will soon happen. According to the best interpretation of ISO guidelines for urban fire protection the City of Youngstown could get by with six engines, three ladders and a true heavy rescue and two battalions. There should be a new No. 1 station at Ford Ave and the expressway. Eventually after the Hubbard Arterial is finished a new Northeast station instead of the two present ones. A new Southeast station instead of the dilapidated No. 9 ....recommend Copper Av and RT 680 location. The station on the west side is obsolete and no longer startegic and a new one should go at Bear's Den and Dogwood. This would meet ISO requirements and improve coverage to the South side . Time alone will tell if any of these improvemnents will be actually forthcoming or whether they shall remain a dream in my eye!

Youngstown is just so full of problems... wouldn't it be great if the mayor was to pick up the phone and actually do something to get companies to relocate here. Sad to say, we really need an economist and a financial planner as mayor, and McKelvey is not. Sure, he probably has a business degree (he was county auditor), but he can't financially run this city. If the city was financially secure, the rest would click. Things like these inspection vehicles and new battalion buggies and a new station 9 are all necessary to improve the fire protection of this city. A simple look at moving Station 9 will show that it very well might improve our ISO rating, saving tax payers money. The mayor and city council do not have a grasp of issues like that.
(Is anyone tired of hearing me b*tch about the mayor? Sorry...)

in spite of the aforementioned gloom i believe that the chief of yfd will likely get his requested heavy fire apparatus at year's end since it will be paid for via HUD community devlopment block grants in 5 annual lease payments staring in 2005 and going to 2009

Speaking of YFD fire stations, Greg, are there any plans in the works for your site to incorporate floor plans with photos they link to so that we can check out what these stations look like on the inside?

Tell ya what, I'll add it to my wish list. It's quite possible to do such a project. It will take some time though.
