Youngstown Firefighters Memorial
« on: January 14, 2004, 06:37:19 AM »
I have spoken about this issue in the past, I have yet to see anywhere any reference to Retired firefighter Bill "Brownie" Brown who was the original desiger of the memorial. I can tell you this for a fact, without Bill Brown there would be nothing across from # 1.

Bill went out and solicited materials, concrete, labor with very little cost to Local 312. This was a very large task as there was no support from the City to get this done. There was also not a lot of support. Once Bill got going on the project he did not stop ubtil his dream was realized.

I think it is great that my former Union Brothers and Sisters  have taken up the cause and are making plans to make this beautiful dedication to the monument and the ultimate sacrifice of our firefighters who gave the their lives, but lets please not forget those who came before us and made this living monument from a dream to reality.

Thank you for your kind words about my dad, William E. Brown, Sr.  My dad and mom are now living in Columbus, Ohio to be near to my sister, brother and I.  My dad is now 80 years old and he and my mom have been married for 56 years.  I can also attest to the fact that my dad spent countless hours on the Fireman's Memorial across from Station #1.  The Memorial is a tribute to how very much my dad cared about all the Fireman he worked with and felt so strongly that all of you should have a memorial.  I am truly sorry that his name is so rarely mentioned when the Memorial is discussed and in fact, I have personally heard politicans from Youngstown actually trying to take credit for that memorial.  My dad desire when he passes away is the have his ashes distributed at that memorial, so please don't forget how hard he work so that all of you could have somewhere to be remembered.  Sometimes things don't need to be any better than they already are.
