How attached are firefighters to their truck?

I asked a captain over at Station 7 how attached were firefighters to their rigs? I was thinking specifically about Engine 7. How attached do you think some of them are to their rig? If Engine 7 goes to 3's will you see some firefighters putting in transfers as well? What do you think?

I seen firefighters that preferred one type of apparatus over another, but not enough that they would transfer to stay with a given rig.
One thing that I have seen on a couple of occassions is firefighters staying at the firehouse (even on off days) after a new rig was placed in service so that they could make the first worker with the new piece.

I honestly don't believe that a firefighter in all Youngstown will transfer to station 3 when the telesqurt goes there. Maybe if one does it will be because they like the firehouse at staion 3 better than the one at 7's since 3's is new and 7's is very old. But as for a telesqurt that dosen't see much use as such I see no real likelihood of anyone switching over. To the contrary....the new truck slated for Engine 7 will be vastly superior in design...including roll-up compartmentation, hydraulic ladder rack, top-mounted pump controls, raised roof, to name but a few of the amenities. Also....any future plans for a new telesqurt will likely focus on a significantly longer reach than the present 50-ft range thus adding considerable weight as well as a crew cab and who-knows-what-else so I personally doubt that a telesqurt will EVER be assigned again to the present station 7 at Elm and Madison, the problem being one of excess weight on an almost 100-year old floor! The location of station 3 where the current telesqurt is presently slated to go will prove to be a FAR more strategic location for a single telesqurt for the whole city as the station has complete and total highway access to the ENTIRE city.

Let me tell ALL you people something. First off nobody can just up and leave with a truck no matter how "attached" they are to it. You have to know we have a UNION and we can not move with out an opening at a station and turn. Then if there is such an opening, senority comes into play. The most senoir of the rank wanting the transfer will get the transfer. Hope this puts all these CRAZY ideas to rest. Contact me at Eng 7 C-turn for further answers. John Reiter
