  Pierce Contender Custom Apparatus

I am interested in hearing from anyone about their experience with the Pierce Contender Custom fire apparatus...both positive and negative input...especially how things were upon delivery....were all things in order and if not were they cared for promptly...also how are the trucks doing after being debugged and in service for a time?....YFD4

a comment appearing on the Firehouse.com forum in response to the inquiry about Pierce Contener apparatus is so far quite encouraging....yfd4

My brother is a captain with the Dumas, Tx FD and they have had their custom Contender in service for about two years. It has worked very well. Hardly any problems.

mon may 6

new engine 2 and 7 will enter service   (   02
prc/contenders)

eng 3s rig will go to eng 6 (98 prc/saber) eventually

eng 2s rig will go to eng 12 (98 prc/saber)wed may 8

eng 7s telesqurt will go to eng 3 (89 prc/arrow)eventually

eng 12s rig will go to the spare fleet at the shop (78/96 mack/cf)

eng 6s rig will go to eng 15 (87 prc/dash)eventually

only eng 9 will remain unchanged
and sq 33 and ladder 22 and 24

eng 9s 87 prc/dash will eventually be painted the new yfd scheme of all red with a white reflective stripe and will receive the updated additional graphic on the rear left which says in small letters fYd

sept will see the new HUGE extra long wheel-base  sq33 prc/enforcer which will have a side mount pump of 1250 and a booster of 750 and a/c plus hydraulic ladder rack and tilt cab and 12" raised roof plus strobe lighting package...it will have considerably more storage space in the compartments than the new high-side contenders just received

in 2 years it is expected that a new telesqurt will be purchased with either a 65 OR 75ft reach to be assigned at this point in time to station 7

later.... 2 additional pumpers will be needed to replace the 87 prc/dash pumpers

and finally a new ladder to replace the present ladder 24

new cars for the 2 battalions are also forthcoming and will be larger than the present suburbans and will be ford instead of gmc thru state purchase :D

the new contender pumpers are now in service with engs 7 and 2  and the 98 saber and 89 arrow telesqurt will be readied for reassignment to engs 12 and 3 respectively as soon as possible. they are presently receiving maintenance at the dept shop and are being updated as to graphics and numbering and should be in their new homes quickly. ;)

Engine 7's new rig will go out of service tomorrow (Wed 5/8/2002). It's going to Cummins in Hubbard to repair an oil leak from the camshaft that will require tearing the front end of the motor apart. It will be out at least a day maybe longer. They will most likely get the squirt back temporarily.

ladder  24 should be back tomorrow at the shop in their rebuilt incarnation fri morn and will be entering service immediately having been upgraded considerably by kme at their facility in virginia

eng 2's ex 98 saber entered service after changeover today at the shop and is now at station 12 on mcguffey rd

next week the telesqurt will go to station 3 after some maintenance has been completed on it.... having served at station 7 since 1989

numbering and lettering will be done   shortly and will take place downtown at  the shop on all units requiring such due to reassignments :)

today ladder 24s rebuilt rig returned to service after an a.m. changeover at the shop. the rebuilt rig is beautiful to behold and is planned to remain in service till 2012.

the telesqurt is being readied for service at station 3 next week and will be tested from this new location as to suitability for a newer version in a few years that will be a 75ft model. after a sufficient time in service it will be decided where a new telesqurt will be placed around 2005

meanwhile one or two new pumpers will be planned for the future to replace 1987 dash models. hopefully this will be within a couple of years

the new squad truck on order from pierce will be around 8 feet longer than the present rig bringing it to around 33 feet or more in length. to keep the overall size under control it was decided to go with a side mount pump to avoid too much length and thus make it difficult for this future rig to negotiate certain streets in youngstown

a new single bay station for station 9 is on hold till further notice and will be located in the midlothian blvd area somewhere no further west than zedaker ave

any plans for a new station 7 that may materialize at some future time will likely be for a new station virtually in the same location as the present one on madison and elm

engine 2s new contender is at cummins diesel in hubbard ohio and a 1978 mack cf ex-eng 12 is running as eng 2

the spare that is left for duty if needed is the 1981 mack mc at the shop

Only thing YFD4 left out is that Engine 7 will be going to Cummins Diesel in Hubbard Tuesday (5/14) to repair the camshaft oil leak.

good news

engine 12 not only has a nice 1998 pierce saber pumper but new numbering of a different sort than that used by yfd

also the 1989 telesqurt is being prepped for service and has been renumbered and relettered for its new home at station 3 using the newer decalls also
will report when it enters service

subsequently there will be two addtional reassignments and renumberings in yfd  and these will be reported on when they take place

work is proceding on eng 3s telesqurt if ever more gradually than expected and as soon as this is completed the unit will be ready to enter service on the west side of youngstown.

eng 7s new contender is at cummins diesel for work and will be returned to service as soon as that is completed

meanwhile the unit is operating with spare 1....a 1981 mack mc 1250/500 former eng 15

spare 2 to- be is a 1982 mack mc 1500/750 still in service at eng 15 and spare 3 is a 1978/96 mack cf former eng 12

when eng 3s telesqurt enters service in the upcoming future then the 98 saber will be given pm at the shop, renumbered to eng 6 and then assigned to the east side station

thereafter eng 6s 87 dash model will be given pm at the shop and renumbered eng 15 and put into service on the west side

delivery is slated for september for a huge pierce enforcer rescue/pumper for squad 33 at the downtown station said to be very long in the dimensions of possibly 33-36 feet with a side mount pump, hydaulic ladder rack, raised roof, 1250/750 pump/tank configuration and air conditioning as well as roll-up compartment doors
