Engine 7's telesquirt is out of service at the factory getting referbished. It should return in a month or a month and a half. When it does, it will be all red. Orignially, it had white over red cab. It will also receive the standard department graphics package.

I must say that when I saw e7 after her return, i thought she was a new engine. I was a big fan of her old paint job, and it took a little getting used to, but I like the changes. The new graphics on all the departments apparatus is great and has an 'old school' appearence which I like.

How often does the TeleSqurt get used on Engine 7? Cincinnati had a couple of them that were purchased in 1980, but they never seemed to be used very often. They worked well at some large fire though.
What is the YFD experience with the piece?

Hey Steve, from what I know from going to fire scenes, Engine 7 uses thier squrt fairly regularly. Youngstown sees a lot of 'surround and drown' type of operations due to vacant house fires. No use saving them, so they let them burn. I have seen, at least 3 times over the summer, Engine 7 raise the Squrt and simply hose it down. Also, because of some of Youngstown's older, tighter neighborhoods, it is unrealistic to raise the 100-foot ladders for the job when the 50-foot Squrt can do the same thing. I see it as a valuable piece in the YFD arsenal.

May I share a dissenting view please. My recent contact with 7's telesqurt crew suggested otherwise. Apparently the unit is NOT used regularly and for this reason it IS dispensible and will be moved out soon to station 3. Some at 3 are NOT looking forward to this move and rumor has is that a local newspaper had an article recently that mentioned the proposed move and I wonder does anyone know about this article?... Actually from what I saw in Cincinnati, you're both right. They TeleSqurt was terrific if it just happened to be in front of the building and you needed a water curtain or heavy stream appliance.
The problem was that the situation didn't happen often enough to justify the cost of keeping these units in service.
This is Engine 19's rig, a 1980 Seagrave 1250-300-50' TeleSqurt. The twin to this rig was at Engine 3.

I heard from one source that the damage to Engine 7 was quite significant. Greg, your photo seems to indicate otherwise. Can anyone pinpoint the level of damage, repairs needed, estimated cost, when out/return to service, and other details? What spare are/will they be using? Any information is greatly appreciated.

I've circled the main damaged sections of the truck in the following photo. The hydraulic ladder rack is dented and bent. It will probably need to be replaced. Unknown what the extent of the damage to the hydraulic and electrical portion is. The rear rool up door has a large scuff mark from the top to the bottom where the pole hit. There is also damage to the area immediately below the hydraulic ladder rack but above the roll up door over the wheel. The roll up door is also indented the entire vertical length of the compartment.

So what is the current status of Engine 7's former apparatus? I'm asssuming that it is in service and assigned to another company or is it now a spare?

Steve, if you are referring to thier former 1989 Pierce Arrow T-Squrt, it was reassigned to Engine 3 on the lower West Side. The 2002 Contender they are running with is, as far as I know, still out for repairs with Engine 7 running with Spare 3. Greg might know more...

E7 is back in service with it's 2002 Contender (until it breaks again). I'm not sure when they got it back, probably about the time L22 want out of service to be sent back. Ladder 22 is operating with the SE3 (Spare Engine for those abbreviationally challenged). Engine 3 is now the proud owner of Ex-E7's telesqurt. I don't see the squrt being used like it was when it was at 7's. Maybe because it's mostly the RIT unit on most calls now a days. Most of the fires were in it's 1st due when the squrt was at 7s. However in addition to that, I guess the department has taken a more active approach to firefighting. Even on vacants they try and get in and knock it down. No more surround and drown. I guess that method has caused some problems with adjecent houses so now the chief feels it's better to get it knocked down if possible and limit the damage to the structure involved.

the present conventional wisdom eminating from yfd is that at year's end a new platform might be forthcoming for ladder 24 and a new triple combination pumper for engine 3 thus eliminating the telesqurt from the apparatus roster for the present and possibly permanently or possibly a new quint apparatus for engine 7 in 2004 or later.
