What will be left after November 5th???
« on: October 22, 2002, 04:03:13 PM »
I ask, if the 1/2% Public Safety levy does NOT pass on November 5th, what will be left fire protection
wise?

I have heard that the city may close all but two of it's 8 stations and could be running the following...

Station 1 (MLK, Jr and Fifth Ave)
- 2 Engines
- Ladder 22
- Squad 33
- Battalion 1

Station 2 (Indianola and Oak Hill)
- 2 Engines
- Ladder 24
- Battaion 2

Any equipment left will be placed in the most needed areas.

Has anyone heard any other rumors about what might happen if the levy doesn't pass?

hey there guys,
you know, i sit down here at school in Alliance, and i come on the site everyday and read about what goes on in Y-town and the surrounding areas.  And I look at what the city has as far as a fire department.  To me, the guys that are working now are really busting their butts.  I feel sorry the guys sitting at home, wishing their truck coudl be out fighting that fire or covering the city.  But instead they sit at home wondering what will happen if something else goes up in flames with nothing to cover the city.  I read greg's post on what may be left in the city once Nov. 5 comes around and somehow I don't think the city wants that.  I commend all those people that took signs and put them in their yards.  I too wish i could have put on in my yard, although i live 45 minutes away from the nearest Y-town fire station.  To all the firefighters, i give you a pat on the back, those working and those waiting.  You guys do a good job.  To those that vote yes on November 5th, i give you a pat on the back too.  Don't worry guys, i have faith in the people of the city that you will all be back at work and in full strength.  To you here's a hat's off--Good Job Guys!!

well, if they close station 7, there goes all those plans for the big celebration of the longest open station ....

I hope everyone in the city opens their eyes to what is happening here and votes for the levy .. or the city will have more problems than they want on their hands ...

I hope the YFD the best of luck!Hopfully the city's people see that fire protection is needed!About 2 years ago a vote was to take place in Las Vegas for more firefighters, rigs and stations. The vote ended up passing but it was like 48% No 52% Yes.That really worryed the department (Las Vegas Fire And Rescue) because people here really didn't see the point in having more firefighters. But at least some of them were start enough.Wish you the best of luck!

25 additional layoffs will result if more are released either sooner or later closing 2 additional units per day.

Looks like worst case after November 5th, you will see 5 stations close. Apparatus and remaining manpower will be as follows:

Station 1
1 Engine
Ladder 22
Squad 33
Battalion 1

Station 2
2 Engines
Ladder 24
Battalion 2

Station 3
1 Squirt
1 Engine

Total manpower = 94 (Was 124 up till about 2 months ago)

Let's hope it doesn't come to this though.

Whoa, alot better then when one came up in vegas. It was for like 4 new stations,96 new firefighters,19 rigs and a few other smaller things. It passed at 52% Yes 48% no.The department was worryed that it wouldn't pass.Well the voters of Youngstown are very smart. The ones that voted yes at least.  ;D So does this mean that any Engines or Trucks that had to be closed down every few weeks will open and stay open. There will be no more close's?

Well, the difference between the Vegas vote and the Youngstown vote is that the Vegas vote seems like it was for capital improvement and expansion of the fire department. The Youngstown vote was for the survival of the department and the city. All laid off firefighters, 15 I believe, will return to work in the coming weeks and all closed stations will return to operational status along the same timeframe. That still puts Youngstown below minimum staffing, because they lost quite a few people to retirement and a buy-out. No station will be closed again, at least during this fiscal year. Now next year is a different story...

I just wanna congradulate the YFD and it's members. All those laid-off guys can stay there and fight fires where they belong, in Youngstown. Even though I'm 3 hours away, i felt what you were going through. And hopefully you may be able to get some more guys since you lost those to retirement and buy-outs. Good luck guys!
