First Day of Closings...
« on: August 10, 2002, 06:02:04 AM »
It was weird hearing E12 and E15's name from the 8:05 department roll call this morning. The department closed 2 of it's trucks on a rotating basis starting at 8:00 am with the shift change on Saturday, Aug 10th. E15, however, went back in service at approx 9:00am after enough manpower was available to reopen it.

I've also heard that 15 went in service and 9 went out of service. So is it E12 and E15 or is it E9 and E12 that are closed this rotation? Can anyone clarify that?

I have always thought that 12 and 9 were closing first. Not sure. Did 9 respond to that alarm on the South Side today? Nope. The answer may lie there.

Yesterday I spent about 4 hours walking the picket lines with the guys down at station 9.  The 2 stations were 12 and 9 that were closed.  Keep your heads up Youngstown Brothers. We can get through this together.

There has been quite a bit of media coverage as of late. Check out youngstownfire.com's main page for stories. All four TV news stations covered it as well as the Youngstown Vindicator and the Warren Tribune.  I've been having one heck of a time keeping up with all the news.

The Youngstown Vindicator web site had a poll as to whether people supported a sales tax increas, what a surprise (sarcasm), the breakdown is as follows:

Do you support:
Yes 41.95 % (146)
No 58.05 % (202)
Total Votes: 348

Well, so far it seems that Eng 9 has been able to remain open on many of the days it was supposed to close. Does anyone know if they will ever staff Eng 12 over 9, or is the 9 the one they will go to first all the time?

9 is not a good candidate for closing. when 14 was open and 13 and 4 the southside had a lot of coverage not to mention 11. 12s district lost 2 located at  oak and fruit and thats it. the southside took the big hits. so 2 and 9 are it. you cant prefer 12 over 9.   9 is tactically more important even if it is less active than 12 which it may or may not be.

Just for the record, I never stated I would prefer 12 open over 9. I feel bad for everyone in the district of a closed fire station. All I'm saying is that I would hate to see a fire on a street like Miltonia, that's all.

Now that Engine 3 and Engine 6 are closed, Engine 2 is getting dragged pretty far into the Northside to cover as a third-due. Does anyone have any guesses as to whether Engine 2 or Engine 15 would make it quicker to the Northside, the Crandall Park area?

(Engine 2: Down Market, over Commerce, Up Fifth and there. Engine 15: Up Schenley, Over Belle Vista, Down Mahoning, up Belmont, over Crandall and there)

i think eng 2 is a better choice for 3rd due on the northside since 3rd due is supposed to be RIT and also that leaves 15 alone to cover for 3 and 2  and 9 to cover for 6 and 2
