I've heard that Youngstown is looking to order a new telesquirt and maybe another engine. Let's talk about this

Y'Town needs a 75' quint. Sutphen makes great 70' quints. Short wheelbases and low overall height. That way Y'Town could have 3 "ladders" available. Eventhough I am a Union firefighter, and Quint is a bad word to us, they make outstanding resources to departments with shaky budgets. The length is the only downfall due to the possible overhang of the aerial device. The City of Akron went with Sutphen Quints when their budget was uneasy. They got rid of all ladder companies except for the 2 downtown, and created "Truck" Companies with the new Sutphens. They had 6 man cabs, 1500gpm, 350 gallon tanks, and 70+' of stick.
If Y-Town got one of these, then they could have 2 aerial devices downtown, or just another engine company with master stream capabilities.

Another possiblity for Y'Town would be a 54' Articulating Squrt. They make for great master streams when you dont need an aerial. That way it saves mileage and hours on the expensive ladder trucks.
I was a volly for a department that had one. It was first due to everything in the downtown area, plus to all industrial alarms. It was set up for straight city limit usage. Minimum allowable supply line, and lots of highrise packs.

Well, I would say that YFD needs a news two TeleSqurts, one for Engine 7 and the other for Engine 3 put on Pierce Quantum or ALF rigs, as well as new battalion chiefs vehicles! Those are a must, as the ones they have are ten years old. Maybe new Hummers? Am i asking too much? And since I am talking gibberish, lets get YFD a brush truck! A Hummer based brush truck. I put up some pics last week of Hummers in firefighting service and thier are some awesome capabilities and opportunities for such a piece. It could handle brush fires and car fires in the downtown area with only 2 crew members cross-staffed from Squad 33.
I would love to see new rigs for Engines 9 and 15. That would make the entire YFD fleet except Engine 3 and Ladder 24 of 1998 vintage or newer. Make that 2 new engines and a new telesqurt or quint, and boom! Almost brand new engine fleet for this city to love and cherish.

Okay, New situation....
YFD purchases -
1. A 70' Sutphen Quint, 1500gpm / 350gt
2. A 54' Pierce Quantam Squrt / 2000gpm / 500gt
3. A Pierce Quantam Engine / 1500gpm / 500gt
4. A Hummer for Squad 33's Utility vehicle
5. Two Chevy Trailblazers for Batt 1 ' 2.
Where do the 3 new trucks get stationed and how do you staff them, and what special equipment, if any will be on them? Also what trucks go into reserve and which ones are sent to scrap yard?

Whoa. How'd we go from getting 2 new trucks, 1 tele and 1 engine, to getting a sutphen quint, tele, engine, hummer and 2 chiefs cars
Oh wait that's just a dream
Oh ok
Actually, take that hummer and station it at Engine 12's rather than 33's utility vehicle. outfit it with brush equipment too while your at it. E12 covers da woods of Youngstown and they could use it! Give E3 the quint. E7 the tele back and well the BC's are a no brainer.

I'd have to say give the Squrt (articulating not tele) to Station 1 and re-organize Engine 1. Narrowing Squad 33's responsiblities to just city wide workers and extrications in Battalion 1. Giving Station 1 - Engine 1, Ladder 22, Squad 33, and Batt 1. Also give Squad 33 one of the old Batt vehicles so they can have a scat truck for all the BS alarms.
Then take that new engine and give it to Station 2 and move the Contender to Station 9. Making the Dash a reserve piece.
I agree about the Hummer... Good Call on that one.
Take the shiny new quint, equip it with a set of jaws and put it in service at Station 3 as Truck 3. This gives Batt 2 another option in case Squad 33 is tied up elsewhere. Also gives downtown the option of another ladder if the tower isnt needed on 24. Make the Tele Squrt a reserve piece also, or trade it in on a new one for 7.

Keep in mind Engine 2 has a set of extrication tools just in case the squad is committed to another run. However having a third set on Engine 3 is more than acceptable

This pic is from
http://cnyfiretrucks.tripod.com/
of Binghamton NY.
But these trucks are very similar to what Akron has, and what I think Youngstown should purchase next.
Hey Steve, Maybe Warren Should Look at a couple of these!!!

Well, here goes yet another plan.
Station (1)
house the following
Battalion 1
Engine 1
Squad 33 ( with Jaws)
Ladder 22
Boat 1
Safety 1 (one of the old bat chiefs vehicles) to be used for service calls
Reserve Engine 1
Station (2)
Engine 2
Ladder 24 (with Jaws)
Battalion 2
Safety 2 for those calls that don't require an Engine
Reserve Engine 2
Station (3)
Engine 3
Tele Squirt (3) or Truck 3
Station (6)
Engine 6 (New Truck)
Station (7)
Engine 7
Tele Squirt 7
Should have two Fire Vehicles housed here
Station (9)
Engine 9
Station (12)
Engine 12
Brush Truck 12 ( for grass fires)
Station (14)
Truck 14 (The Joint Arson Truck)
Reserve Engine (if the city dosen't scrap them all)
Station (15)
Engine 15
Of course this is all a DREAM. With the equipment in this fassion, the ISO rating for the city would raise ie: ISO class of 2 or 1, making the insurance costs for property and home owners cheaper.

Do they ever plan on manning Engine 1 again? With YSU buying alot of property inand around the downtown area Engine 1 would be an assest and not a burden.
It would also help with St. E's.
Is every Engine and Ladder manned with 3 or 4 firefighters? What about the Rescue?

When I talked with The Chief last, he said that there are still no plans to reactivate an Engine 1 downtown. There just are not enough downtown boxes that it warrents it. With E7 and S33 able to handle the downtown load, Engine 1 isn't really a necessity.
The Chief did say that he would most likely reactivate an Engine 5 over in the Brier Hill area before he would reestablish an E1. That would help relieve the workload of both E7 and E3 to the northside plus would cover the area in the event they close the 711 connector (E3's fastest route there) and would drop E7's load so they could better cover the downtown boxes if they should increase.
Keep in mind there are no plans currently to do ANY of this but it's just what his thoughts were.
Your thoughts?
