I would have thought that there would be lots of replies as far as EMS/Alarm Drops as that is certainly the bulk of the calls around here.

Well it didn't take me any fancy schmancy computer assisted statistical analysis to arrive at this decision, actually all I had to do was look at 2 places. One was the Youngstown fire calls forum and the other place is the annual reports page.
Youngstown in 2001 saw 240 alarm malfunctions, 552 unintentional false alarms, 62 malicious false alarms and 217 good intent calls. Many of those would no doubt fit into the Fire Alarm drops category (that and maybe those strange people who see dryer exhaust and call the fire department)(sigh).

about 800 ems runs, we get about 1 structure fire in our town a year, we do mutual aid with a neighboring department often for structure fires, if its not ems calls, its MVA's and alarm drops

I would definetly have to say MVA's....out of our station with the rescue...we do about 370-380 calls per year...120 some are mva's

Now see this is where they get ya... In most cases, MVA's are nothing but difficult EMS calls. Sure there are hazards you need to watch for, like traffic, hazardous materials from the vehicles involved, and things like that, but most MVA's, at least a good number, are not extrications. They are nothing but traumas. C-collar, backboard, packaged, and go...
So in reality, when one says that 1/3 to 1/4 of a departments calls are MVAs, mosts of those are EMS/Trauma calls rather than extrication.

Our FD does not run an EMS service. The EMS service is provided by the county. I indicated "other" because we run medical assist calls in the city with EMS. I did not know whether the intent of the EMS option was to include medical assist. So if I have indicated "other" in error, my vote would be EMS.

Wow, way to bring back an old post. Now that I am a firefighter in VA, I can safely say 70% of our calls are EMS. We are a fire department-only system, meaning we run all fire and EMS in the County. One day you are on the engine, the next day you could be on the medic unit. We run engine's (or heavy rescues and trucks if the first due engine is out) on almost all EMS, except clear BLS calls.

My other is for any type of rescue call.
And Since everyone is putting their call volumes I'll put my two cents in. Keyser run 350-400 calls per year, with about 10-15% being working structures, about 70% being car wrecks and other rescue calls and the other volume being AFAs, smoke/natural gas investigations, grease fires, brush fires & flue fires (aka seasonal fires), possible structures, and false alarms.

More than 60% EMS.
Suggestion for survey.
Call Types:
Fire Calls
EMS Calls
Hazmat Calls
Rescue Calls (Vehicle/Machinery Disentanglement, Elevator Stuck, Technical Rescue)
Service Calls (Lock Out, Water Leak, Etc.)
Mutual Aid

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions!
What do you mean "biblical"?
What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor. Real wrath of God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, and volcanos! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

Sylvania Twp Fire does about 4000 calls per year with four stations. We run EMS first reponse, and the bulk (80%) of our calls are EMS. We also house, and staff, a Lucas County EMS Life Squad (ALS transport unit) which does around 2000 runs per year additionally.

THIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD QUESTION , THAT I LOVE
NUMBER ONE A FIRECALL IS WHEN WE EXTINHGUIOSH FIRE WHERE IT DON'T BELONG , SOUND EASY SO FARTHEN WE GO TO,OPERATIONS , DEFECTIVE HEATERS OIL BURNERES ACVM BE NASTY BUT STILL NOT A FIRE .JUSNMK AUTOS AND EVEN SOME VACANT BUILDING TOO UNSAFE TO ENTER ARE RUBBISH FIRES , SO
A LARGE VACANT UNUSEABLE BUILDING FOR 5 ALARM WITH 20 ENGS IS A STILL A RUBBISH FIRE AND THE MORE YOU FIND NEW NAMES ETC IT BRINGS DOWN THE FIRE TOTALS AND YOU WIN NFPA AWARDS . WHY DOES EMOST FD'S WSEND OUT MANY RIGS ON AFA WE SEND ONLY ONE NO MATTER HIGH BIG OR IMPORTANT
IWAS FIRSTN IN ON INDEPENDENCE HALL NEVER WENT THERE FOR A ALARM THEY HANDLE IT DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY WOULD WANT A BUNCH OF UNKNOWN PEOPLE WALLING AROUND A SECURED BUILDING DIFFERENT AREAS OF PHILLY HAVE DIFFRENT TYPES OF RUNS
GHETTOS GET MANY WORKING FIRES IN THREE STORY ROW APARTMENT HOUSE , CENTER CITY GETS ALMOST EVERYTHING
I WAS IN AOUTLIEING CO FOR A COUPLEM OF YEARS THAT GOT BRUSHN , ACCIDENSTS ON 1 95 FIRSTN IN
AND HAD TWO OF THE LARGEST FIRES IN THE CITIES HISTORY
WE SEND 2 -2-1-ON DWELLINGS AND EVERYTHING ELSE GETS 4-4-2- NOW WE HAVE FIRST RESPONDERS ,YEA GREAT I WOULD GUESS THE AVERAGE ENG IS RUNNING BETWEEN 2,300 RUNS A YEARS AND INTER CITY NUSY CO'S WHO KNOWS BUT VERY BUSY
BUT MY GUESS IS MANAY EMS RUINS , AND FIRES IS THER BREAD AND BUTTER WORK FOR THE WEAKSW RETIRE LIEUT PFD
