Here's one from Cliffside, NC.  It's an ALF Century 1500/1000.

Elkins, WV has a nice fleet of apparatus in this scheme.  Here is Engine 403, a Sutphen 1500/1000.

Hi Dave,

A couple of questions about these.  Has Elkins painted all of their apparatus silver and blue?  I stopped there about 20 years ago and each piece of apparatus was painted a different color at that time.

Also, is that Cliffside pumper the one that was used by ALF in their ads for a while?  I don't recall the name of the department that was in the ads, but they were in North Carolina too.

I thing the ALF you are referring to in the ads may have been Carnegie Pa. They were the first that I know of that used the 1977 Chrysler blue metalic with the pewter silver roof. There was a picture on one of the calenders shot by the late Jack Grieble, it was taken in the winter  from on top of the hill at Eldridge Park in West Elmira. The picture in the snow with the lake frozen ove behund it made a truly sharp picture. I did notice on the Cliffside Truck, the "Hobo" name in gold leaf is missing. The name was put onthe truck if I remember right in memory of the Chief there who died in the line of duty...and it was also thier first new apparatus.

I think they started that in the mid- to late-1980s and have since standardized their fleet.  I believe that the rainbow deal was them buying used rigs and not repainting them.

Partly, but not completely.  Some of the different colored rigs were purchased new.  The 1963 International CO-8190/Pirsch was a demo truck and was painted black.  The 1966 International CO-8190/ Sutphen tower was red.  The 1979 Chevy/Pierce rescue was new to them and it was painted silver/blue the first time I saw it in the late 1980's.  The 1981 International/Pierce was chrome yellow and was designated as the first out for calls outside the City limits.  The 1984 International/Pierce, the 1987 Ford Pierce mini-pumper, and the 1989 Pierce Dash were all delivered in silver/blue.  The Haz-Mat they bought from Altamonte Springs, FL was not repainted, but the Sutphen tower was repainted silver/blue, as was the PemFab/Ranger heavy rescue.  The International 4400/Smeal and both new Sutphens were all delivered silver/blue.

When I visited there in 1983, the fleet was:
66-67 IH CO-8190/Sutphen tower;white/red
1970 Ford L/American;white/red
1963 IH CO-8190/Pirsch; black
1981 IH S-2500/Pierce; yellow
1973-75? IH 4X4/Pierce ?/?;yellow, was this rechassied on the 87 Ford?
1979 Chevy K-30 4X4/Pierce mini rescue; IIRC THIS WAS WHITE
1976 IH L-1700/69 Sutphen; white, a mystery rig, why rechassis?
guess I'll have to start an Elkins thread...

City of Madison, IN.

The City of Madison can be found at the crossroads of US-421 and US-56 along the Ohio River in Jefferson County. For decades, each fire station and company has had it's own name and specifc color apparatus.
