Political Correctness (def.) - a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

My Favorite! Sutton, Massachusetts Engine 4 is a 1977 American LaFrance Century, 1500/500. It was originally purchased by the Franklin, MA Fire Department in 1977 and assigned as Engine 2. In 1995, Franklin purchased a new E-One and assigned it Engine 2, and as such reassigned the LaFrance to Engine 4. Sutton purchased it in 2000 and kept it as Engine 4. It has be rehabed a few times, had a pump replacement in 1995, and was overhauled in 1996-1997 following a motor vehicle accident. Here are a few photos of the history of the truck.

Mt. Clemens, MI
1985 ALF Quint
1000/200/100ft.
There is story behind this apparatus. Orginally built for a FD in South America, but never was delivered. Sat in a warehouse until 1989 when it was sold to the Shelby Township, Michigan FD. Then sold to the Mt. Clemens, MI FD in 1996.

Department of Energy - Fernald OH  Engine 312
1970 American LaFrance
1000 GPM - 500 Tank
#7 - 1 - 1940
Steve Hagy photo.

Fernald was a facility that was in the pipeline for nuclear fuel enrichment.  The site is on the toxic waste "Superfund" clean up list.  The fire department at Fernald was shut down around 6 months ago.  This particular engine was taken out of service about 1995.

When removed from service the radiation levels on the apparatus were too high for the pumper to be junked or sold.  Instead, the apparatus was cut into pieces, sealed into containers, and buried with other nuclear waste in Nevada!
