Engine 48
7017 Vine Street
Carthage

This photo shows the station not long after it was opened.  The 48's have their apparatus on the ramp.  The rig is one of 10 1913 Republic/Ahrens-Fox 250-gpm pumpers that were purchased.  A more recent photo of this building is shown on page 1 of this thread.

Something a little different here.  This photo shows the interior "House Watch" area of Engine 51's quarters (there is a photo of the exterior of the station on Page 1 of this thread).  I miss the "old" style house watch areas with an alarm board showing the box locations that a company was assigned to, an alarm register, and in Cincinnati the teletype machine for department messages (i.e. FH OOS 1237 Ryland).

Today in Cincinnati there is the Zetron alert device and a printer to provide the address and category of run (the printers are ancient by today's technological standards).  The person on watch is supposed to strike the gong a few times if a run comes in that is a 1-alarm.  At least a little bit of the old style is still there.

i have a quick question for you cincy guys... is it department policy that kids of visiting firefighters not be allowed to get into your rigs? i stopped at a station and was met by a Lt who acted like he totally did not want to talk to me about the station or the rig (this was a weekend afternoon) and when my 3 yr old asked if she could get in the engine, he was real snippy and said "no this isnt your dads truck so you cant get in" then proceeded to tell me that it was CFD policy that unless you worked there, then kids were not allowed in the rigs. To me that was the craziest thing i have ever heard, since most of us love to let kids check out our rigs and show off what we have.. i was just wondering if it was just him or the entire dept was like that..

rcr2921,

Please don't  let one LT with a wild hair up his arse make you think the whole department is like that.  I am not aware of any policy that states unless you are a member of the CFD that your kids are the only ones allowed on the rigs.   Face it some firefighters and officers are real passionate about the fire service and love to pass that on to kids and then you get the ones who don't give a rat's a** about anything.   Stop by the 19's house in Correyville when unit 3 is on and you will be treated like royalty.

Another view of the scenic quarters of Engine 50 in Saylor Park.  You can see another picture of this station and read more about the history of the building on Page 1 of this topic.

Engine 39
This former house on Dana Avenue east of Montgomery Road is now in-use as a bar. This building was constructed as the home of the Evanston V.F.C. and became home to the 39[s after annexation of the neighborhood into Cincinnati.

Engine 34 - Clifton
301 Ludlow Avenue at Clifton Avenue
Something a little different here.  I've been photographing some of the CFD stations from the rear to show details that aren't visible in the standard shot of the apparatus doors and front of the house.  The door for the hay loft can be seen here on the Clifton Avenue side and the hose tower is easy to spot.

Engine 51 Dedication

Cincinnati Dedicates Fire Station No. 51 on November 16, 2009

Today, the City of Cincinnati dedicated the new firehouse for Engine Company 51.  Located at the corner of Llanfair & Hamilton Avenues, Fire Station 51 will help the Cincinnati Fire Department deliver quality services to College Hill and the surrounding communities, especially with the addition of Ambulance 51. The new fire station replaces the existing facility on Marlowe Avenue which was built in 1914 and is approximately three times larger than the previous station with a total of about 12,000 square feet.

Fire Station No. 51 was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards as designated by the U.S. Green Building Council gold level certification.  Unique features of the environmentally built fire station include an innovative rain collection system and rain garden, a pervious parking lot, vegetated and reflective roofs, and use of natural lighting throughout the building. Mayor Mark Mallory emphasized that, "As the City’s second government facility built to LEED standards, it will be more energy efficient and lower operating costs all while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment.”

Fire Station No. 51 has proven by way of energy modeling software, that once occupied it will be at 28% more energy efficient than typical new building construction. Strategies implemented to achieve this level of savings include using natural lighting, low E triple pane glass, using highly reflective roofing surfaces, and increasing the insulation in the walls and ceiling systems.

“The capital funds for this project are an important part of building the public safety infrastructure within our neighborhoods.  The opening of Fire Station No. 51 serves to enhance the public safety service delivery and develops an important gateway into the City of Cincinnati,” said City Manager Milton Dohoney.   “This creates a solid anchor for the South end of the College Hill Business District and furthers the vitality of the Hamilton Avenue Corridor and the City as a whole.”

The Fire Station will help deliver quality services to the surrounding communities, especially with the addition of the Ambulance unit. The new fire station will also include facilities for female fire fighters such as a separate restroom as well as a locker area and individual sleeping cubicles in lieu of a large dormitory area.  Additionally, the new fire station meets all current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.  "With this new firehouse, the Cincinnati Fire Department will continue to improve firefighter readiness and be better able to serve the community," said Fire Chief Robert Wright.

Fire Co. No. 47
3830 Borden Avenue
Constructed 1913 - Closed 1922.  Company was relocated to the quarters of Engine 12 for a brief period of time before being disbanded.
This building was demolished in the early 1970's as it stood in what would become one of the eastbound lanes of I-74.

Engine 5's house in 1990 or '91. At the time it was one of the busiest houses in the nation. Anyone know if they're still up there on the list? I remember they were surprised to have visitors but were happy to show us around, although they had 4 runs in the hour I was there.

Engine 3 & Ladder 1 - 6th Street west of Vine Street

The former quarters of Engine 3 & Ladder 1 was a big building. This station also served as headquarters and was the location of the fire alarm office for many years. Notice that the building is equipped with a watchtower.

Steve,

Here is another photo taken in 1904, showing the equipment staged in front.  A stone carving between the bays says 1869, so I imagine that is when it was constructed.

Hello, I hope it's okay if I chime in, uninvited... ;)

I work right next to Station 47 in Cincinnati!  Well, what I mean is that Station 47 is now Golf Manor Fire Department.  They run a quint, a 2001 Seagrave engine, an ambulance, and a Chevy Tahoe ALS unit. This is in Cincinnati, but is actully a suburb.

I'm not experienced on this forum, so I might not be realizing that you know all this already.  If so, I apologize!
