Regarding Madison Indiana's Fairplay Fire Co. No 1 - it is not the oldest active fire house in Indiana. Madison's Washington Fire Co. 2's station is the oldest. The city of Madison built the 2s station while 1's moved from its first station located a block to the north and converted the present station in the late 1800s from a livery stable to a firehouse, addiing the hose/bell tower. Both 1s and 2s had steamers as did 3s. 4s had a ladder truck. At one time all four downtown companies, 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s (local names) had motorized Ahrens-Fox apparatus, three pistons pumper and a city service truck. 2s 1916 pumper is privately owned and 4s city service trucks is owned by the fire company.
