Harlan KY
1950 American LaFrance
500 GPM - Quad
#L 4101 Model: 705-QJO

This apparatus was originally sold to Beach Haven, New Jersey and then saw service with the Rockledge, Pennsylvania Fire Department. Harlan purchased the apparatus in the mid 1970's. The Harlan City Hall and Fire Station burned down a few years after this picture was taken.

The picture below is of a 1951 American LaFrance series 700 pumper that was originally owned by the Franklin, MA Fire Department. In 1987, Franklin traded in the ALF when they bought a new Hahn. I would be very appreciative for any information on where this truck may be today.

Thank you.

I used to own this Quint.  The first picture is from when it was still in-service, the second picture is from when I owned it (2002-2003).

:D some where in all my stuff i have drwawings and info on thefirst 700's. The first 700 seriespumper sold, actually the first ad second were sold to Elkhart In. Te original dsigner of the 700's, a gentleman named John Gribos, was stillalive and well in Elmira a few years back. The most unfortunate hapening at LaFrance is when they moved from the old bulding on LaFrance street to the newer renovated buliding a mile away, the archives, otherwise known as the rats nest, for the biggest part did not get moved. The file cabinets in the room were almost 12 foot high, rows upon rows of them. They didn't take them with them when they moved and were subsequently dumped by the thousands in dumpsters.Unfortunately my house wasn't big enough to move what was getting thrown out..but whata sin. Alot of the prototype stuff that was there was removed by John Peckham, who was putting together a major publication on ALF. Unfortunately John has passed on. I don't know what happened to all his stuff.   One thing I can tell you ALF lovers...the best time anyone who likes ALF, shouyld have been ther or the 150th aniversary celebration.

This ALF was from Saugus, MA. This was a photo postcard on ebay in April 2005. I have no information on this rig.

This truck is still alive and well. It currently resides in Western NY State and is about to relocate to a brand new home in North Central PA near the headwaters of the Allegheny and Genesee Rivers.

After being retired from Franklin the engine went into private ownership but didn't exactly stay retired. While housed in Wellsville NY it was placed into service on 2 occations for about 6 months each while the department was awaiting delivery of new apparatus. It was even first due on a couple of structure fires during that time.

Franklin 1 (as we affectionately call it) is now in full retirement and only sees service for musters and parades. It is about to be relocated to a brand new building in PA. It still sports its origial paint job. Franklin 1 is currently equiped almost piece for piece to the inventory list (which we have a copy of) for when the engine was in service in Franklin, MA.

Photos and other informationn on Franklin 1 and the rest of our collection can be found at http://www.vintagevollies.thefirehall.net

I hope you don't mind if I post these pics on our site.

I would appreceate any other in service photos of Franklin 1 that you may have or any information on the history of the engine.

Thanks,

Mike

P.S. - Just noticed that you listed it as a 1951..... its actually a 1954 (note the rubber set windshield)
