Early Lynn MA Broad Street station photo
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:36:00 PM »
Found this early photo of the Broad Street Fire Station from Lynn, MA.  If you look closely on the left side of the building, you can see a three masted schooner apparently tied up at a berth.  I don't think the ocean is now within a half mile of where the station was.  I am not even sure if the station is still standing (C.R.S.), maybe J. has a better memory than mine.

Station closed early 1970's, Demolished about the same time. The cellar of the building could be tidal and that had an effect on the overall condition of the structure. Built in 1876 to replace first paid house on Mulberry St. Quarters of Engine #4, Engine #6 (Sort of) Chemical #1 and orginally Ladder # 1. When the city recieved it's first Aerial Ladder (Hayes Patent) in 1886 or so, Ladder #1 moved to Fayette St. Engine House and Ladder #3 ran from here. This appears to be an early photograph. Later on other Factory buildings were added to the left of the picture. The Conflagration of 1981 started just a few doors up the street. I have been told by some that if this house had been open at the time of the fire there would have been an interior attack and some would probably have been killed.

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions!
What do you mean "biblical"?
What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor. Real wrath of God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, and volcanos! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

When the tide comes in it gets wet. When the tide goes out it gets damp. Apologies to you Inlanders.  :)

That was quite a station!!! Ladder Co. 3 used the far right bay. I remember back in the 50's the Tillerman couldn't get into his seat until the truck moved about 10 ft due to a low ceiling at the rear of the bay.The Ladder Truck that replaced it around 1963 had a shorter wheelbase,so it fit fine.

I love Victorian architecture, especially the ever famous Victorian mansions and the old firehouses of the day.  What I'd give to run out of a station like that.
