Another system going........
« on: May 21, 2011, 05:08:06 PM »
May 20--RENSSELAER -- The city's fire alarm boxes will go silent June 1, ending a era of fire service history.

The city will put hoods on the estimated 61 boxes mounted on utility poles. Eventually they will be removed and sold to collectors.

"The old system served the city well, but it's really a bygone era," Assistant Fire Chief Philip Smith said.

Firefighters are generally alerted to emergencies by calls to the 911 system.

During the last two-and-a-half years the department responded to 3,800 calls of which only 16 came through the fire boxes. All 16 were false alarms.
