Prince Georges County brush trucks and jeeps
« on: February 26, 2011, 02:04:27 PM »
Laurel had several jeeps and 6x6s in past years, this 1967 Diamond Reo was purchased thru state surplus in 1978. Work had not yet begun to convert it to a brush truck when the 'Blizzard of 79' hit. This rig was hastily cobbled up as a special unit to respond 1st out. It carried hose rolls, ladders, and tools, along with 2 SCBAs. After the blizzard, it was sold to neighbor Bowie VFD, who did a heavy rebuild on it,along with a 250/500 pump& tank, new body and front cage. It was in service until 1990-91, and then sold privately. It was stored at the old Sta. 15 in Montgomery Co., for several yrs.

Laurel's 6x6 was supposed to replace this 1967 Jeep CJ5 10/60.A LVFD legend is reportedly this jeep attempted to cross the nearby Patuxent River to reach a brush fire, hit a deep spot, and sank out of sight except for the red bubble light, which supposedly kept revolving. It was repaired and sold to a private citizen. It was dubbed the "submarine" in honor.

Glenn Dale VFA
1989 Chevy 4X4/Slagle 200/100
County-owned, 1 of several, IIRC this was the last brush pieces bought by the county?
Consulting some old rosters, PGFD had at least 18 brush pieces dept. wide in 1977, by 1997 this had fallen to 14, how many now?

I love these photos!  Deuce-n-halfs, Jeeps, and Loadstars all used as brush trucks! And this story is probably as true as the story floating around KFD of our 1958ish Dodge M37 scaling Queen's Point!  But interesting nonetheless!

Accokeek VFD
1968 Jeep CJ5 10/65
In 1993, this was stored at Baden's station and had been OOS for some time, does have an interesting protective cage...

The 1978 jeep was lost in 2008. Reported to have hit a burning haybale and flipped, then the haybale fire extended to the jeep with the results shown...

Two things: Baden has really bad luck with brush trucks. And I believe the brush units that are white with the red strip and have the PG County logo are County owned, not owned by the volunteer company.

I'll have to dig through the Floyd collection I have but odds are brucobuff has all the same rigs. I know there's one of an ALF 900 stuck in the mud, does that count?

I dunno if that'd be a brush truck, but that's certainly an interesting picture that I'd love to see!
