Barton Hose Co. #1, Barton , MD.
« on: May 31, 2008, 06:14:34 PM »
Barton, MD., is in Allegany County, about 15 miles south of Frostburg. Once a bustling coal-mining town of near 1,000 pop., it is now a bypassed village of a few hundred persons, with few reminders of its past.
After a big fire in Feb. 1919 that took out a large part of the town business district, the fire co. was formed. They used at first hand-drawn equip., then a 1927 Dodge chemical wagon, then in Jan. 1933, this 1932 Buffalo 500/100 pumper.

The 32 Buffalo was replaced in 1975 and has been passed around several owners, most recently several rears ago in Indiana.
This shot was taken at a Baltimore,MD. muster in 1977.

Barton Hose had this imposing brick station erected in 1947, once housing 5-6 pieces of apparatus, it now houses 3.

Barton's 1st equipment truck was a 1956 IH Stepvan. By the mid-80's, it had been replaced by this 1963 Chevy stepvan.

A surplus 1971 Ford 3000 gal tanker was rehabed and placed in service in 1978 to replace the 58 GMC/Central. It would be taken out of service around 1990.

In 1982, Mack delivered a CF 1000/1000 pumper which would be 4-doored around 1989-90, and then rehabed by Pierce in 2000, undergoing conversion at that time into a rescue-eng. Its final disposition in 2007 is unknown.

Barton Hose became involved in rescue work in 1987 with the purchase of a 1962 Ford F-700/Gerstenslager from neighbor Potomac FC of Westernport,MD.
In 1995, the 62 Ford was replaced with a Freightliner FL70/4-Guys unit which was sold in 1999 to Orleans VFC,MD., also in Allegany Co. The decision was then made to convert the 82 Mack into a rescue-pumper.

4-Guys delivered this 385/220 brush truck in 1991 on a Ford F-350 chassis to replace a 1963 6x6 brush rig. It remains today and runs with Barton's 2 Pierce Dashs; ER19 (2006), and ET19(2000).
