"Peerless" is just the style of mechanism. Gamewell also had Gardiner, Ideal,  & Excelsior.

Yes. Peerless is the correct name on the inner works. You may find Gardner too, but it will be MUCH more expensive!!
Look for the book too! Some reading and many hours looking!

I'll be plunking down the money on the book soon; books I know where to find  :)

This has all been very, very informative. Thank you. I appreciate that something as old as the "inner box" for the Gamewell will be difficult to find and is hard to price. I was just looking for a range and I think I've got one now. Though it will be hard, it's good to learn that it won't be impossible to locate one.

Once I do locate one, I imagine it'll have an inner wheel that does not match the number on the outside of the box. I see that many auctions/individuals sell both the wheels and their matching numbers as a pair. How difficult is it to change the inner wheel?

As far as that inner holder for the spare pieces of glass is concerned, it looks like that is just bent sheet brass. Is that the case? Also, might you know the dimensions of the glass? I measured the retaining channels but to have an accurate measurement on the glass itself would be even better. As far as thickness is concerned, it looks to me like simple picture frame glass will work.

The code wheels are not hard to change and when you get to that point, we can talk you through it. As far as the glass goes, I use 1/16" plexiglass. You can score it with a razor blade and it snaps clean. I cut the pieces 2 3/16" x 2 11/16". This is slightly shorter than the orginal, but you can slide the glass in the holder, close it, and slide the glass under the lip of the lock and it will hold it in the closed position. When you want to operate the box, slide the glass down and the holder will flip open. I've had great luck with this and it is nice to display the boxes with the key guards closed without the use of a key.

This has been a very helpful thread, and I find I have another question.

I've been looking at my box's outer shell and I see that some of the screw holes in the back of the box are threaded - presumably to attach the inner box to the outer shell.

What size screws am I looking for?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Those may be hard to find. They should be brass, round head, sloted, machine screws. They are an odd thread. I too need three. May be someone will speak up.

Oh, dandy. I've seen door and hinge screws on ebay but nothing regarding the screws to attach the inner box to the outer shell.

Well, if anyone knows a source or has measurements for these screws, I'm interested.

Thanks!
