Boardman Fire Department Web Site...
« on: May 13, 2002, 06:13:17 PM »
I ran across the Boardman Fire Department Web Site the other day. There are some awesome fireground shots of the Maag Mansion on 224 burning up.

http://www.boardmantwp.com/fire.htm

For those of you not familiar with the area, the Maag Mansion was a huge house built on a hill off of Route 224 in Boardman, Ohio. Well, commercial developers wanted the prime real estate but historic preservationists wanted the hugh house preserved and turned into a museum. Well someone went in and torched the sucker. From the pics on their site, it was a good camp fire! Click on the gallery link to see the photos.

There are also some really nice shots of their current fleet. All Sutphens and 1 Ford Rescue, go figure!

The website mentions that there is going to be construction at two of the stations coming up.

Station 73 (Shields Rd) is being remodeled in Spring of 2003 .... and the site says it will be able to house 'more than just two fire fighters'

Station 74 (South Ave) is being rebuilt in Spring of 2003, and the site says the same about it ... 'will be able to house more than just two firefighters'

whatever that means .... I guess we will have to wait and see ...........

mornin fellas,
as for those fire stations being rebuilt in 2003, this is what i was told by a good friend from the department...Station 74 (where my friend is at) is supposed to be torn down, while E74 and the guys will be put in the parking lot of Pat Catans, E74 under a cover and the guys in a trailer.....Station 74 will be rebuilt being able to handle more firefighters at that station, where space is a hair bit cramped right now....there are supposed to be 2 bays built one for E74 and a supposed new purchase of a Quint somewhere down the road......
As for Station 73, i think he said it was going to be remodeled and the bays left as they are....if i hear anything else, i will let everyone know.....peace out struthersboy

I wondered what they were going to do with the engine and men when they tore the station down ... I live on the other side of the freeway from the station off of Mathews Rd ..... That temp set up might make for some interesting pics to post   *snicker* ....

yes, i'm sure it will make for some VERY intersting pictures, as E74 will be parked under a tent sort of, like them porta-garages you see.....and as for the trailer, well i'm sure that will be exciting too...maybe the will even get them Porta-Potties to make them feel at home!!  peace out---struthersboy

From the 2/3/2003 Youngstown Vindicator (www.vindy.com)

Issues addressed related to women joining the ranks

Plans are in the works to
renovate two township
stations for future needs.

By JOHN W. GOODWIN JR.

VINDICATOR STAFF WRITER

TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS ANTICIPATE more women will be joining the ranks of firefighters here in the near future, and they are gearing up for the change.

Gloria Grande, 36, the only full-time female firefighter ever to work for the township, has been with the department for about 18 months. She said coming into the department as the only woman took some getting used to for everyone.

'It's not easy being the first at anything. The guys had to get used to me being here and I had to get used to them,' she said.

Grande shares dormitory-style sleeping and living quarters with the men with six beds and a single shower. In the early months some of the guys would forget to close the door while at the urinal, she said, and everyone had to learn to knock before entering a room or bathroom.

'It was more difficult for [the men] to remember to close the doors and things like that,' she said. 'I grew up in a house with four brothers and two sisters, so for me privacy was always pretty much out the window.'

Since Grande joined the department, locks have been installed on bathroom doors to avoid accidental walk-ins and curtains placed around each bed for additional privacy. She no longer wants to be viewed as the first or only female firefighter in the department, but as 'a firefighter who can do the job.'

On equal footing

Chief James Dorman agrees that all firefighters should be looked upon equally in their ability to perform the job, but he said every member of the department must be prepared to have both sexes living and working together. The chief is therefore suggesting sensitivity training for all township firefighters.

'Our department has finally gotten its first firefighter who is not a male, and it just seems like the appropriate thing to do to get us all a little extra training in the area of sensitivity,' he said.

Dorman said no problems between the sexes have led to the call for training. He said it will help each firefighter modify his or her behavior with the opposite sex in mind.

No date has been set for the training. Dorman said he is still looking for the appropriate course for the department.

Another change will be in the living quarters at the township's three fire stations. Two of the buildings will be completely renovated in the near future and several gender-sensitive additions will be included.

The renovated stations will include restrooms that are divided into three sections so that three people can privately shower or use the restroom at the same time. Dorman said the new bathroom setup will also save time.

There will also be individual sleeping units for each firefighter on duty.

'These guys spend a good deal of their time here and really don't need to be in dormitory units,' he said. 'These things are for everyone to achieve some additional privacy.'

I have been told by the Cheif Dorman that sta. 74 will not be torn down until the new station is built behind and to the south of the old one as the recycling center will be relocated and the house to the south that the TWP. bought will be torn down. So sorry no tents guys!!

LOL

Fire station work ...
I have an article in my possession about the fire station work:

  - The architect is Hanahan and Strollo.
  - Bids are expected to be opened on the projects at the May 12th Trustees Meeting.

  - As Dean mentioned above, the new station (74) will be built behind and to the South of the old building, and when they move into the new structure, the old one will be destroyed.

  - At 73, they will be remodeling using the existing foundation and frame to fit the remodeling into.

Key features in both structures will be:  doublewide and double depth apparatus bays, new and remodeled living quarters,  and decon/scrub rooms next to the apparatus bays.  Six bunkrooms in each building with three bathroom/shower rooms and modern kitchens.  They will both have fitness areas as well.

The article also mentions remodeling station 71, and the possible need of a 4th station in the southern section of the township (station 72????).

The article was in The Boardman Reporter, spring 2003 issue.

Within the last week, I have noticed that they have dropped the office trailer for the construction of 74 inside of the fence used for the recycling bins.  The bins have been moved to the Pat Catan's Lot, and the trees slated to be removed are marked with red ribbon.

The contractors for the constuction of 74 have been chosen.  However, the bids for the remodeling of 73 have been thrown out .... they were thought to be too high. I haven't noticed if they have taken new bids yet.

They are taking new bids for the 73 work now ... and the construction company has started work on 74 ... I am going to follow the progress and start a thread with pics here after I post this message.  I took the first pics recently, and plan on taking more tomorrow if time allows me.

I am wondering if Boardman plans on hiring a bunch of new guys after their next test to fill all these vacant bunks at 73 & 74?  Anyone have any information about this?  I know a group of Geauga County firefighters that would fit in well down there.

Went by all stations the other day.  74 is coming along very nicely, and 73's addition is quite large.  It runs about 75 feet to the rear of the existing station.

I heard a rumor that Boardman wants to buy squads and run medics.  Is this true?

Thanks for any info fellas.   :)
